OSU Sweeps Recent ASM Student Competition

Each year, the Oregon Chapter of the ASM International (the materials information society) hosts a Student Night as a venue for students from Portland State, Oregon State, and the University of Oregon to present their materials research, with cash awards going to the top three presenters. This year’s competition was on April 23, and the winners were all from the School of MIME!

  • First place: Nitish Kumar (PhD student working with Dr. Dave Cann) for his presentation on bismuth-based perovskite compounds for high-strain fatigue-free lead-free actuator materials
  • Second place: Laura Oliveira (MS/PhD student working with Dr. Alex Greaney) for her presentation on the effects of nanostructure and defects on thermal transport in graphite.
  • Third place: Austin Fox(PhD student working with Dr. Brady Gibbons) for his presentation on control of crystallographic texture and surface morphology of platinum-on-titanium dioxidetemplates for enhanced PZT thin-film performance.

The press release, with a photo of the winners, is viewable here.

OSU–NSBE Chapter Members Attend National Convention, Win Seats on NW Zone Exec Board

Over spring break, six members the OSU chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) swapped rest and relaxation for networking and professional development at the 39th annual NSBE convention in Indianapolis. Under the leadership of Nathan Okorley (OSU–NSBE president and IE senior) the chapter set out to increase OSU’s profile at NSBE through service on the regional executive board and professional development.  Kenny Warren, an ME sophomore, was elected Region VI Northwest Zone chairperson; and NE sophomore Taylor Griggs is the new Region VI treasurer. For additional details about the NSBE convention and OSU’s participation, visit the CoE Ingenium Blog.

MIME-based Design Team Finishes 7th in First DARPA FANG Challenge…and Seeks New Members for Challenge #2

A design team comprising eight members of the OSU Complex Engineered Systems Design (CESD) Laboratory – MIME post-doc/instructor Sarah Oman, instructor Douglas Van Bossuyt, graduate students Joe Piacenza and Joe Hortnagl, and undergraduate students Tyler Dean, Kyle Aman, Ben Williams, and Justin Rowe – recently competed in the first of three design challenges sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency’s (DARPA’s) Fast, Adaptable, Next-Generation Ground Vehicle (FANG) program.

For this first competition, CESD team members utilized open source, online tools to develop a drivetrain for an amphibious military assault vehicle capable of navigating through both land and water.  In March, out of 250+ teams that started the challenge last fall, the CESD team made it to the final round, placing among the top twenty. The final vehicle configurations were submitted for judging in April, and OSU placed seventh overall!

The second DARPA FANG challenge, which focuses on chassis design, will begin next September and has a $2 million prize for the winner. The CESD Lab is again planning to compete and will be looking for both graduate and undergraduate participants. For more information, please contact Joe Piacenza.
