OSU names new leader for international affairs
Kendra Sharp, a professor of mechanical engineering at Oregon State University, has been named senior advisor to the provost for international affairs. She will begin the half-time appointment on Dec. 31.
“Kendra will be excellent in her role as OSU’s senior international officer and provide leadership for the development and implementation of strategic university initiatives in global engagement,” said Ed Feser, Oregon State’s provost and executive vice president.
As senior advisor, Sharp will collaborate with Oregon State faculty, academic administration and leaders at INTO Oregon State to advance research and teaching engagement globally, increase the number of international students at Oregon State, and support student success among international learners. Sharp will serve as a member of the provost’s senior leadership team and on a number of working groups and councils charged with advancing the strategic goals of the university.

Sybrina Fulton, mother of Trayvon Martin, author and advocate for social justice is the keynote speaker for the 37th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration lecture on Mon., Jan. 21, at 11 a.m. at the LaSells Stewart Center. Through Dec. 5, free tickets are available to OSU faculty, staff and students for the Jan. 21 peace breakfast and the keynote session. Beginning Dec. 6, keynote session tickets will be available to the general public. The celebration week runs from Jan. 19-25. An NSF-funded Cybermanufacturing REU Site at Texas A&M University is inviting applications for undergraduate students (rising juniors and seniors in STEM disciplines) who are strongly interested in summer research experience. Participants will be given the opportunity to work alongside faculty and graduate student mentors in ongoing faculty research in cybermanufacturing related topics. These include developing new “Apps” for real-time applications, architecture and working with innovative machines and data analytics, and investigating new design approaches. The participants will also have an opportunity to participate in several enrichment activities like industry tour, GRE workshop, research seminar, and Aggies Invent program. Graduate Students,registration is now open for the 2019 Graduate Research Showcase taking place on Friday, February 8.
The Graduate Research Showcase is a daylong opportunity for you to advance your professional knowledge and skills, network with industry partners, and share your research with industry, faculty, peers, and the community. We are also pleased to welcome Dr. Inger Mewburn (The Thesis Whisperer) who will be giving the keynote at a luncheon exclusively for College of Engineering graduate students who present a poster and/or attend a workshop session. Please read the schedule and details regarding the Graduate Research Showcase. Space is limited to 200 students and registration will close January 11, so do not procrastinate in securing your spot!
FE Review Course Open for Registration
The Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE) club at Oregon State is hosting the annual FE Review Course during Winter Term 2019 (exact dates on website, link below). This course is specifically designed to assist OSU engineering students who are studying for the FE Exam. The following subjects are covered: Mathematics, Probability and Statistics, Engineering Economics, Electrical Fundamentals, Statics, Dynamics, Strength of Materials, Materials Science, Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, and Heat Transfer. Registration includes access to digital recordings of each lecture and notes on Canvas through Sept. 1st, 2019. The cost of the course is $100 for OSU students if you sign up online before December 16th. The cost will be $125 after December 16th. If you have any questions, please contact email@example.com.
Good news - it’s not too late to find a mentor for the URSA Engage Program! Student applications to the URSA Engage Program are due on January 11th, which leaves you plenty of time to communicate with a faculty mentor over email or on the phone even if you’re out of town during winter break! We hope you take the time to apply for this exciting program and join others whose lives have been changed by engaging in student-faculty partnerships! Here are the steps you can take starting now to apply for URSA Engage:
- Go to the URSA Engage website and read through the faculty mentor summaries.
- Reach out to faculty of interest via email and set up a meeting or phone call (a great option if you’re leaving town for winter break) to discuss applying to the program.
- Once you find a mentor, have them sign the Faculty Mentor Approval Form, which can be found on our website and will need to be attached to your final application (due January 11).
- Submit the program application!
Oregon State’s new online scholarship search and application system, ScholarDollars, is now accepting applications for more than $50 million in 2019-20 scholarship funds. OSU students may complete one application to be considered for more than 1,600 campus-based scholarship opportunities. Students are encouraged to submit their ScholarDollars applications between Nov. 1, 2018, and Feb. 1, 2019, to maximize the number of scholarships for which they will be considered.
