OSU Mechanical Engineering:
Undergraduate Mission and Goals

The undergraduate mission of OSU ME is to provide a high-quality engineering program that prepares students for successful careers, lifelong learning, and service to their profession and society. Individuals who complete our undergraduate program will known for their technical competence and creativity; for their ability to apply, adapt, and extend their knowledge to solve a wide variety of problems; and for their effective communication and collaborative skills. They will also understand how the humanities, social sciences, basic sciences, and technology interact to affect society; and they will be community builders and leaders, respecting and valuing diversity in all its manifestations.

To fufill this broad mission, the department's undergraduate program has five specific goals:

  1. Educate students thoroughly in mathematics, basic science, and engineering sciences relevant to their discipline's professional work, including fundamental concepts, experimental techniques, methods of analysis, and computational applications.
  2. Develop students' abilities to communicate effectively, work collaboratively, and embrace diversity.
  3. Develop students' awareness of the historical evolution of engineering knowledge and technical applications; the state of current professional practice; the importance of lifelong learning; contemporary issues; the impact of engineering actions and solutions in a societal and global context; and the professional and ethical responsbilities associated with an engineering career.
  4. Develop students' abilities to formulate and solve problems, integrate and synthesize knowledge, and think creatively, all requisite skills for analyzing, designing, troubleshooting, and improving products, processes, and systems and for planning and carrying out experimental research.
  5. Provide an integrated design-based offering of hands-on experiences and actual work experiences that produces graduates who are work-ready in both thermal and mechanical systems.
