Course Description

An introduction to the mechanics of nonlinear elastic, plastic, and viscoelastic materials including large deformations.

  • Mechanics of non-linear elastic, plastic, and materials with time-dependent response
  • Mechanics of large deformations
  • Alternate definitions of stress and strain

Learning Outcomes

The student, upon successful completion of this course, will be able to:

  1. Use indicial notation to represent the compatibility, equilibrium, and constitutive equations of mechanics
  2. Use alternate definitions of stress to solve problems involving large deformations
  3. Use alternate definitions of strain to solve problems involving large deformations
  4. Determine stress and strain behavior for viscoelastic materials
  5. Determine stress and strain behavior for plastic materials
