We are pleased to present our first newsletter for the new School of Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering, or MIME (the inevitable jokes about white-faced performers abound, but we pronounce it “Em Eye Em Ee”) at Oregon State University (OSU). With the School’s creation, programs associated with the former OSU departments of Mechanical Engineering and Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering are now together under one roof.
The benefits and successes associated with this new partnership are many, and in the following pages you’ll learn about some of the exciting things that have been happening in MIME.
Much of the current research within our school relates to advances in energy generation and efficiency and supports a new College-wide initiative in Sustainable Energy and Infrastructure, or SENERGI. Some of these projects are described in this newsletter.
One of the outcomes of our MIME partnership is the new capstone design class that brings ME, IE, and MfgE seniors together to work on multi-disciplinary teams. We showcase three of those projects in this newsletter, along with stories about our Baja and Formula teams, which took first and second place, respectively, in the 2009 SAE competitions.
You’ll also learn about several international collaborations that are changing the way our students learn while creating opportunities to work on global projects. And you’ll read about some of the extracurricular learning experiences that round out our students’ engineering education.
We continue to enjoy strong relationships with industry, including a highly supportive and engaged Industry Affiliates Board. And we celebrate the successes and achievements of all our MIME friends and alumni. To help us keep in touch with you—and to provide a means for you to connect with one another—we have created an MIME LinkedIn group here. We hope you will join us in this virtual Beaver community!
As is true at many other institutions, OSU is moving toward electronic publications—such as this e-newsletter that you are currently reading—in an effort to reduce our carbon footprint. If you would like to continue accessing future newsletters electronically, please e-mail us at info-mime@oregonstate.edu with your full name and e-mail address. We recognize that Internet access is not always an option for everyone, so if you prefer a printed copy of future newsletters to be delivered via US mail, please e-mail us with your full name and mailing address.
Within each section of this e-newsletter you’ll see all the articles from the printed version, plus you'll have access to the additional “online exclusives.” We are proud of the accomplishments and successes of our school and we hope you will enjoy reading about some of them here. We invite you to revisit the MIME Web site throughout the year for stories about the successes of our faculty, staff, and students.
Sincerely,
Belinda Batten,
David Cann,
Stel Walker
