Seniors – Registration Opens Tomorrow for 2014 Senior Dinner Recruiting Event

The annual EECS-MIME Senior Dinner is Oct. 22, 2014 at 6 pm, and we are opening online registration on Oct. 7 (tomorrow!). We have a solid line-up of regional and national corporations eager to fill openings for full-time jobs as well as paid internships. Get ready to meet top companies at three "seatings" -- an appetizer, dinner, and dessert session. (The dinner is free to students.) Garmin, Georgia-Pacific, PepsiCo, Tektronix, Maxim Integrated, Blount International, Trimble, McKinstry, and ESCO Corp are among the companies interested in School of MIME students.

2014 University Day Accolades for Doolen, Paul and Stone

Three MIME faculty received honors for their service and research achievement at the annual University Day awards ceremony.

Toni Doolen, professor and Dean of University Honors College, received the Excellence in Graduate Mentoring Award, which recognizes graduate faculty members who have extraordinary records of excellence and effectiveness in mentoring graduate students.

Brian Paul, received the Faculty Innovator Award, which recognizes a faculty member whose extraordinarily high-impact innovations from research are translated into transformative results that help promote economic development and social progress.

Robert Stone received the OSU Award for Outstanding Service to Persons with Disabilities. The award recognizes a person who goes above and beyond to accommodate and assist persons with disabilities.

MIME Lab Receives Research Gift

The Personal Robotics Group, with personal investigator has received research gift of $10,000 from the Team Gleason Foundation, a foundation created by former NFL player Steve Gleason to support people with ALS. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, is a disease of the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary muscle movement. ALS is also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.   The gift is intended to support the lab's work on a self-driving wheelchair for people with severe motor disorders.

Get Started with ASHRAE – New Group Forming

Interested in leadership, scholarship, research, and career opportunities in the areas of sustainable energy, high performance buildings and thermal sciences? Then help form a new OSU student chapter of ASHRAE. The new OSU student chapter will connect students with the industry chapter based in Portland, as well as other student chapters across the state. A kickoff meeting will be held Oct. 15; snacks and drinks will be provided. For students with a strong interest in forming the initial leadership team, please contact Dr. Brian Fronk prior to the meeting. (brian.fronk@oregonstate.edu, 324 Rogers).

Robotics Club Invites You to Kickoff Event

The Oregon State Robotics Club is kicking off the 2014-2015 school year with an event to learn about the club's various projects, robotics teams, and other resources that it provides. All engineering students are welcome and free pizza will be provided. Membership registration will also be available at $10 for the year or $15 with a t-shirt included. Design, Build, Fly – and Launch Rockets and Airplanes?

The OSU branch of AIAA (American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics) has its first meeting on Wed., Oct. 9, at 6 pm in Weniger 151. OSU AIAA has a Design-Build-Fly group, which builds planes, and an Experimental Sounding Rocketry Association group, which builds rockets. Both groups attend international competitions. This meeting is for members and interested parties and will give information regarding what the club does as well as how you can get involved. See you there…

School of MIME COE Fall Awards

Correction -- School of MIME had four winners honored at the annual College of Engineering Fall Awards Breakfast. Jonathan Hurst, associate professor in the School of Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering, also was honored with the Engelbrecht Young Faculty Award. The purpose of this award is to recognize outstanding young faculty in the college. Last week, we published news about the awards for Troy Ansell, Belinda Batten, and Brian Jensen.

Green Belt Course This Weekend

Register online for the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) Training Center and the OSU IIE Student Chapter will offer the Six Sigma Green Belt for Process Improvement course this weekend. Cost: $500 for students; $950 for professionals and alumni.

Fall Term Wood Shop Qualification Seminar

Students currently taking -- and those that have already completed ME 250 -- may register for one of two fall-term wood shop qualification seminars on either Oct. 14, 10-11.30 am or Oct 16 at 12-1.30 pm. Each seminar will only accommodate 15 students. Seminars are held in Rogers 106. Please contact Darin.Kempton@oregonstate.edu to sign up.

 

Research Study is Seeking Participants

The research study: “UI Design for the Modern Soldier: Designing Relevant, Intuitive User Interfaces for Complex Laser Targeting Systems” (Principal Investigator: Dr. Ken Funk) is seeking participants. The study is investigating the effects of different user interface designs on usability, learnability, and user preference. Participants will complete two sessions in a two-month period. For compensation, participants receive a $5 Amazon gift card for the first session, and a $10 Amazon gift card for the second session.  Please contact Raschelle Barkume (student researcher) at barkumer@onid.oregonstate.edu.

 

EWB Regular Meeting Locations for Fall Term

Engineers Without Borders announces the locations for its regular weekly meetings. Board meetings are Mondays at 6pm in MU 110; general meeting are Thursdays at 6pm in FURM 101; new project meeting are Thursdays at 5pm in PHAR 107; and the Kenya meeting is Wednesdays at 2pm in ROG 440.

Scholarships and Fellowships

IIE – Submit Letter of Interest for Scholarship Opp

Active 2014 graduate or undergraduate student members of IIE can be nominated for IIE scholarships and fellowships. Please check online the eligibility requirements and submit a letter of interest  by 5pm on Oct. 17 to hector.vergara@oregonstate.edu. Please note that you MUST be nominated by the IIE advisor or MIME school head, so please DO NOT submit a nomination using IIE’s online form.

 

Data Scientist Opportunity

The Data Incubator is an intensive six-week fellowship that prepares postdocs and PhDs in STEM + social science fields seeking industry careers as data scientists. Anyone within one year of graduating from a PhD program or who has already obtained a PhD is welcome to apply.

Locations: There will be an on-site (New York City)  (in NYC) and online section of the fellowship.
Dates: Both sections will be from 01/05/15 to 02/13/15
