NNMREC Marks Five Years at its Annual Meeting

The Northwest National Marine Renewable Energy Center (NNMREC) held its Annual Meeting October 25-26, in Seattle, Wash., hosted by the University of Washington. Participants included faculty, staff, and students from the three partner universities: Oregon State University, University of Washington, and the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Also participating were the University of Victoria West Coast Wave Initiative, members of the NNMREC External Advisory Board, and other invited guests.  Dr. Belinda Batten (Director, OSU) Dr. Brian Polagye (Co-Director, UW), and Dr. Jeremy Kasper (Co-Director, UAF) kicked off the meeting by reviewing Center successes, the progress of test facilities, and successful collaborations with National Labs. The group also planned for the next five years. Since 2008, OSU and UW faculty have brought in more than $40 M in support from state, federal, and industrial sources.

Robotics Welcomes Berkeley's Dr. Pieter Abbeel

Apprenticeship learning, belief space planning, guided policy search -- three hot topics in robotics will be discussed in a seminar from Dr. Pieter Abbeel, Associate Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, UC Berkeley. Dr. Abbeel received his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from Stanford University in 2008 and is currently on the faculty at UC Berkeley in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences. His current research focuses on optimization and machine learning for robotics.

Humanity in the Machine from Intel Futurist

Intel futurist Brian David Johnson will discuss “futurecasting.” In his lecture, "Humanity in the Machine: What Comes after Greed?" Johnson counters the myth of runaway, soulless machines, by investigating how technology reflects the mission and values of the societies that create it.

MIME Design & Manufacturing Seminar: Multi-Objective Optimization in Adaptive Multiagent Systems

Ph.D. candidate Logan Yliniemi discusses the importance of cooperative multiagent systems and their many applications including air traffic control, satellite communications, and extraplanetary exploration. This seminar begins with the basics of multiagent system and multi-objective optimization from a practical standpoint; identifies some outstanding issues that have prevented these systems from working together, and proposes solutions.

MPRL Opening Hours - Week 5

Keep track of the Machining and Product Realization Lab operational hours at their website. The fall term schedule at the Machining and Product Realization Lab for the week of Oct 26-Nov. 1 is:
Sunday – closed
Monday – 8-10am; 12-1 pm; 3-5 pm
Tuesday – 8-10am; 12-9 pm
Wednesday – 8-10am; 12-3 pm; 5-9pm
Thursday – 8 am to 9 pm
Friday – 8-10am; 12-5pm

Scholarships and Fellowships


PhD Degree in Wind Energy, and $30K in Funding

Iowa State University announces a new Ph.D. degree in wind energy. The program allows the opportunity to gain experience internationally and in an industry setting. The degree -- Wind Energy Science, Engineering, and Policy (WESEP) -- is interdisciplinary and admits applicants with BS or MS degrees in AeroE, CE, EE, IE, MSE, ME, Economics, Statistics, and Meteorology. Annual $30,000 stipends are available for U.S. citizens and permanent residents.

 

VA Healthcare Systems Engineering Seeks Postgraduate Fellowship Candidates

The VA Healthcare Systems Engineering Postgraduate Fellowship Program is seeking graduating students for full-time fellowship opportunities. The program is actively looking for 3-4 fellows to start in July 2015. An annual stipend is provided to all fellows -- $32,500 for master’s level fellows and $46,000 for fellows with a PhD.  Fellows must have a Master’s or PhD degree by July 1, 2015 and U.S. citizenship. 

 

Udall Scholarship for Native American Studies, Multiple Areas

The Udall Foundation anticipates awarding 80 $5,000 scholarships and 50 Honorable Mention awards of $350 for the 2015-2016 academic year to current sophomore and junior undergraduates. (Oregon State has winners of these prestigious scholarships almost every year.) The Udall Scholarship seeks candidates studying:
1.) Native American health care (includes health care administration, and research into health conditions affecting Native American communities).
2.) Tribal public policy (includes fields related to tribal sovereignty, governance or law; natural resource management; and other areas affecting Native American communities).
3.) The environment (includes engineering, science, urban planning and renewal, and economics).

Leadership Program Seeks Undergrads

The National Society of Leadership and Success is asking first-years, sophomores and juniors to apply for a paid, two-semester internship beginning Spring 2015.
