NW Natural  Funds, Equips New Instructional Lab

NW Natural, in support of MIME senior design teams of the Thermal-Fluid Sciences group, has donated a Capstone gas turbine engine, heat exchangers, supporting equipment and funding for an instructional laboratory. The laboratory will support instruction of students in their thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and combustion courses. The value of the equipment and money is more than $40,000. Over the next two years in collaboration with MIME senior design teams, students will assemble the equipment and support the remodeling of Graf Hall.

Career Fair Day for Engineers is Thurs. Oct. 23

The completely sold-out engineering event is at the CH2M Hill Alumni Center on Thursday, Oct. 23 from 1am to 4 pm. MIME Design/Mechanics Seminar: What is Apparel Design?

Dr. Kathy Mullet, Associate Professor in the OSU School of Design and Human Environment,  will discuss the dilemma of conducting research in the area of apparel design --  from wearable art, to apparel engineering, to fashion marketing. The talk is part of the MIME Design/Mechanics Fall seminar series. Dr. Mullet holds a PhD and MS from Virginia Tech; she taught for 18 years in the Department of Fashion in the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Radford University, before coming to OSU and the College of Health and Human Sciences.

Friday Code Night with Microsoft

Humanity in the Machine from Intel Futurist

Intel futurist Brian David Johnson will discuss “futurecasting,” aka, using ethnographic field studies, technology research, trend data, and even science fiction to provide Intel with a pragmatic vision of consumers and computing. In his lecture, "Humanity in the Machine: What Comes after Greed?" Johnson counters the myth of runaway, soulless machines, by investigating how technology reflects the mission and values of the societies that create it.

Robotics Welcomes Berkeley's Dr. Pieter Abbeel

Apprenticeship learning, belief space planning, guided policy search -- three hot topics in robotics will be discussed in a seminar from Dr. Pieter Abbeel, Associate Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, UC Berkeley. Dr. Abbeel received his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from Stanford University in 2008 and is currently on the faculty at UC Berkeley in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences. He has won various awards, including best paper awards at ICML and ICRA, the Sloan Fellowship, the AFOSR-YIP, the ONR-YIP, the DARPA-YFA, the MIT TR35, and the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society Early Career Award. His current research focuses on optimization and machine learning for robotics.

Data Scientist Opportunity

The Data Incubator is an intensive six-week fellowship that prepares postdocs and PhDs in STEM + social science fields seeking industry careers as data scientists. Anyone within one year of graduating from a PhD program or who has already obtained a PhD is welcome to apply.
