School of MIME Standouts from Undergrad Expo

The May 20, 2016, College of Engineering Undergraduate Expo brought together more than 200 projects from the five engineering schools and a public audience of more than two thousand. The attendees and industry special guests selected a number of top notch projects. The winning projects from School of MIME are detailed below:

The multidisciplinary capstone projects represented by the OSU ASME student chapter took the 2016 Boeing Engineering Excellence Award. The senior projects, which contributed to the group's recent success at the Shell Eco-Marathon Challenge, were part of the build process for the first appearance by OSU ASME at the eco-marathon event. Representing School of MIME were the students for project team no. 81.2 “Shell Eco Marathon Aerodynamics” -- Seth Haddix, Dorrington Lewis and Mark Lotspeich. Representing School of EECS with the capstone project “Shell Eco Marathon Electric Vehicle Control System” are Brian Bove, Brent Madden and Samuel Kurtz. Congratulations to the group, advised by Dr. Chris Hoyle, on their great success this year.

Michael Dexter, David Richardson and James Wilson from School of MIME team no. 9 produced the "Photonic 3D Printer," Team no. 9 was one of two teams recognized by HP with the 2016 HP Innovation Award for a team that has gone above and beyond in order to find an innovative solution as well as have a strong focus on engineering rigor. The team developed a 3D printer which could use nanoparticle metal and ceramic inks to construct objects on the micro scale, using an arc lamp and DLP chip to fuse the layers of material. This project, sponsored by mechanical engineering assistant professor Rajiv Malhotra, expanded upon existing research in the photonic sintering of nanoparticle inks.

Eric Strickler, Camilo Dominguez, and Cameron Humphrey from School of MIME team no. 311 won the MIME Industry Advisory Board Award for Excellence 2016 award for "Automated Tile Grout Sealer." The team developed the "PWA Grout Sealer" borrowing from many existing mechanical systems such as the highway line painter, the automated vacuum cleaner and the inkjet printer to automate the labor-intensive grout sealant process. Northwest Research Labs sponsored the team.

ASHRAE National Award Goes to MIME’s Paul Armatis

Paul Armatis, a first-year year graduate student advised by Dr. Brian Fronk, was selected as a recipient of a $10,000 ASHRAE Graduate Student Grant-in-Aid for 2016-2017 academic year. Paul’s award is to assist with his research in the area of membrane-based energy recovery devices for reducing building energy consumption.  The goal of the Grant-In-Aid program is to encourage outstanding graduate students to become involved in ASHRAE research and establish careers that include active engagement within and continued contributions to Society activities. AHSRAE funds about 10 to 25 students each year with this award. Congratulations to Paul, Dr. Fronk and the newly established OSU ASHRAE group!

Dr. Irem Tumer Invited to Speak at IDC

College of Engineering Associate Dean of Research and Economic Development and School of MIME Professor of Mechanical Engineering Irem Tumer was an invited guest speaker at the SUTD-MIT International Design Centre for a seminar. The IDC is an internationally recognized $100M engineering design center located at the Singapore University of Technology and Design. Dr. Tumer traveled to Singapore and spoke on designing reliable and resilient complex engineered systems.
