“Designing the Future” with Nike VP Ken Black

The College of Business invites you to a seminar with Ken Black, Vice President Digital Design Future, at Nike. Black’s approach as the Vice President of Digital Design Future for Nike is based on his belief that we are all designers and leveraging our collective diversity of expertise and thinking leads to amazing innovations and business solutions. Throughout a diverse career he has had the opportunity to apply this approach as a designer, a general manager and an entrepreneur. As a designer in a corporate world, Ken Black has learned that looking at everything as a design challenge can have its advantages. Black will join Mitzi Montoya, Sara Hart Kimball Dean of the College of Business, in a Q&A session about how designers think and solve problems, how students can leverage design thinking as an advantage, and how innovation is not reserved just for the designer.

His work, and that of D-Lab, emphasizes "design with" as opposed to "design for", and is often in collaboration with community organizations and social enterprises which are serving their communities with household energy and improved cooking products. The talk will cover experiences and outcomes from a project where researchers and students at MIT partnered with early-stage social businesses in East Africa to overcome technical and business barriers to scale, improve product lines, and prime a transition from artisan to industry.
