ALERT for Monday (12/15). Ice and snow have slowed down commuters around
the Willamette Valley, and while OSU remains open, everyone is advised to use
caution when driving to campus. With more ice and snow expected later this week
and continuing low temperatures, monitor news on any affected OSU operations,
as well as driving conditions around campus at the OSU Campus Alert Web site. Updates
will be posted there, recorded on the university's emergency information
hotline, 541-737-8000, and distributed via e-mail.

CELEBRATE THE COMPLETION OF THE
HABITAT FOR HUMANITY’S LEWISBURG HOUSE. Over the past year, Engineers Without
Borders (EWB) has been inviting engineering students to help the local Habitat for Humanity chapter
build a house, and now the Lewisburg House is almost done! The Golden Nail Ceremony (actual completion
of the house) is on Wednesday, December 17, 12–1 pm. Anyone who has helped with this house is welcome to attend. Food will be
provided. And all volunteers are also invited to the Ratzlaff
Family Home Dedication Ceremony on Sunday, December 21, at 2 pm.

MIME MACHINING LAB’S HOLIDAY HOURS. The MIME Machining and Product
Realization Lab will be closed next week (12/22–12/26). The lab will be open

REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS FOR TECHNOLOGY RESOURCE FEE. OSU students,
faculty, and staff are invited to submit proposals to the TRF Committee, who
will review and make recommendations to the Provost for a final funding determination.
The goal of TRF fund is to maximize student learning at OSU through

apply for financial aid and scholarships is NOW!

INDUSTRIAL
ENGINEERING STUDY ABROAD OPPORTUNITY. The Dept. of IE at the
University of Pittsburgh is offering IE students an opportunity to study abroad
in either India or Uruguay during summer 2009.
- Montevideo, Uruguay program: May 15–29, 2009. This
3-credit course focuses on providing students with the fundamentals of
international supply chain methods with a special focus on Latin America. Students
will utilize their knowledge within a cultural context and complete an
analysis of global supply networks and manufacturing culture in Latin
America and Uruguay. For more info on this program, click here.
- Bangalore, India program: August 8–22, 2009. This
3-credit course will combine lectures with visits to various industries in
the culturally rich city of Bangalore, a wildlife sanctuary, and a coffee
plantation. A visit to the Taj Mahal is also included. Lectures will highlight both
business and engineering principles and methods within the context of the

NOMINATE STUDENT LEADERS FOR
2009 STAFF POSITIONS. Several offices on campus
are seeking student leaders/employees for the upcoming year. In an effort to
streamline the nomination process, New Student Programs & Family Outreach,
University Housing and Dining Services, and Office of Admissions have teamed up
to combine the nomination process. Successful candidates have a commitment to
academic excellence, have leadership qualities, enjoy working with people and
have a willingness to share their experiences, and have effective communication
skills. Here are the available positions:
- START Leader—students will work
with the new student orientation program to assist new students in their
transition to OSU.
- U-Engage Peer Instructor—students
will facilitate a recitation of the fall U-engage course, an extended
orientation course for first-year students.
- Resident Assistant—students live
and work within the residence halls to support and assist on-campus
residents.

TOUR Coordinator—students conduct campus tours,
represent OSU during recruiting events and open houses, and have weekly office
hours in the Campus Visitor Center.

URGENT NEED FOR HOST FAMILIES.
OSU’s English Language Institute (ELI) is in urgent need of host families to
host an international university student for a four-night home stay February 6–9. Host families may host
one or two students. The ELI will pay a $20/night stipend per student. These
students are here for a short language/culture program. The home stay provides
an opportunity for them to practice speaking English and learn more about

an interactive discussion course that offers an opportunity to learn essential
techniques, formats and activities conducive to success in the college
classroom. This graduate course will cover topics such as: Syllabus design and
articulating learning outcomes, understanding different pedagogy, crafting an
engaging lecture, teaching to different learning styles, test

FELLOWSHIP (PBF) PROGRAM. The
Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington is
now accepting applications from recent college graduates for the Fall 2009 PBF Program. The program combines advanced
on-the-job training and mentoring, and provides the option of pursuing a fully-funded
Masters of Public Health (MPH). There is a minimum 2-year commitment commencing

MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY SUMMER REU. The Materials
Processing center and the Center for Materials Science and Engineering at MIT
are accepting applications from students who are entering their junior or
senior year in September 2009. The 9-week summer internship program runs June
7–August 8, 2009. Award includes $5,700 stipend and round-trip travel expenses.

UG OREGON
NASA SPACE GRANT CONSORTIUM. You can now apply for the 2009 Oregon NASA Space Grant Consortium Undergraduate
Scholarships. Scholarships of up to $6,000 will be awarded and are only
available to Oregon students attending Oregon Space Grant affiliate
institutions. Awardees will be selected from applicant pools at each of the
eligible schools. Scholarships are open to new and continuing students in the
disciplines of science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines.
The OSGC Undergraduate Scholarship Program supports the National Aeronautics
and Space Administration (NASA) objectives of fostering and encouraging career
goals in the aerospace industry. Individuals from under-represented groups are especially

2009? Nominations are now
open for the 2009 Jack Kent
Cooke Foundation Graduate Scholarship program from the Jack Kent Cooke
Foundation. The Foundation will award approximately 40 scholarships to
seniors and recent graduates planning to attend graduate school for the first
time starting in fall 2009. Each award covers a portion of
educational expenses, including tuition, living expenses, required fees, and
books for the graduate degree chosen. The maximum available per student
per year of study is $50,000 and the maximum length is six years. The amount
and duration of awards vary by student based on the cost of attendance and the
length of the graduate program as well as other scholarships or grants
received. Students interested in this scholarship must be nominated by their
undergraduate institution. Students may not apply directly to the
Foundation for this program, but should instead submit applications to the OSU
