ASHRAE SCHOLARSHIPS:
APPLICATIONS DUE 12/1/08
The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and
Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) sponsors multiple undergraduate engineering
scholarships with award amounts ranging from $3,000 to $10,000. To qualify, you
must be enrolled full-time in an ABET-accredited engineering program (all three
MIME degrees are ABET-accredited); have a cumulative college GPA of at least
3.0; show interest in and potential for service to the HVAC&R profession;
and demonstrate leadership ability, character, and a need for financial

packet must be postmarked by December 1, 2008.
NOTE: A single application form is used for all ASHRAE
scholarships. This form is relatively short and straightforward, but your
application packet must also include three letters of reference. So if you’re
interested in applying, get started right away!

HELP BUILD A HOUSE WITH HABITAT FOR HUMANITY. Engineers Without Borders
(EWB) is inviting all engineering students to help finish building a house on Saturday, Nov 22, 9 am–3 pm (with a
1-hour lunch break). This volunteering opportunity is organized by the local Habitat for Humanity chapter.
Directions to the Habitat for Humanity house: Take 99W North for about 10 miles
to Lewisburg road. Turn left (by the Texaco). The house is about 500 feet down
on the right-hand side. If you have questions or are interested in volunteering,

IS THE 2009 SUMMER FACULTY RESEARCH PROGRAM
FOR YOU? The Office of Naval Research (ONR) sponsors the Summer Faculty
Research Program (SFRP) for US citizens who hold teaching or research
appointments at US colleges and universities. These programs provide an
opportunity for science and engineering faculty members to participate in
research of mutual interest to the faculty member and professional peers at US
Navy laboratories. The SFRP is an on-site, 10‑week program, beginning in May 2009. Stipends:
$1400–$1900/week. Each fellow will be reimbursed for his/her personal travel
for an optional pre‑program

mechanics including dynamics, solid mechanics, or fluid mechanics; expected to
demonstrate a broad scholarly interest in engineering with a special emphasis
on fundamental mechanics; and have an interest in developing or interfacing
experimental mechanics measurements and analysis procedures within the domain
of energy (e.g., fuel cells, renewable energy, energy conversion, clean energy,
or energy storage) or biology (e.g., cellular mechanics, soft tissue mechanics,
macromolecular biology, biodynamics, or biofluids). Senior applicants must have
a distinguished scholarly record with international visibility. Prior
experience working as part of multidisciplinary team is desirable, since such
