SET YOUR COURSE FOR A NASA SUMMER INTERNSHIP

 

This year’s NASA Student Symposium is on Friday, November 14, in the MU Journey Room. The symposium will feature both oral and poster presentations from NASA student interns’ research and experiences. Poster Session: 9 am–Noon. Presentations: 1–6 pm. Between presentations and refreshments, guests will have the opportunity to ask questions about the presentations and internship experiences. Info will also be available regarding future NASA opportunities and programs. This event is free and open to the public. Hosted by: Oregon NASA Space Grant Consortium (OSGC) and NASA.

 

 

WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT YOUR STUDY ABROAD OPPORTUNITIES?

 

The College of Engineering, in conjunction with International Education Week, is sponsoring an Engineering Study Abroad Info Session on Thurs, Nov 20, 5:30–6:30 pm in KEC 1001. Hear from returned OSU engineering exchange students and international students currently on exchange at OSU, as well as faculty and staff who are involved with study abroad programs. Topics to be covered include reasons to study internationally, life and learning in another country, exchange programs offered, general expense info, and application process. HELP BUILD A HOUSE WITH HABITAT FOR HUMANITY. Engineers Without Borders (EWB) is inviting all engineering students to help finish building a house on Saturday, November 22nd, 9 am–3 pm (with a 1-hour lunch break). This volunteering opportunity is organized by the local Habitat for Humanity chapter. Directions to the Habitat for Humanity house: Take 99W North for about 10 miles to Lewisburg road. Turn left (by the Texaco). The house is about 500 feet down on the right-hand side. If you have questions or are interested in volunteering, contact Nick Moses (mosesn@onid.orst.edu). ALPHA PI MU HONOR SOCIETY INITIATION. Alpha Pi Mu, the Industrial Engineering Honor Society, is holding its annual initiation on Thursday, Nov 13, 6:30 pm, in the MIME Library (Covell 117). Plan on arriving 10–15 minutes early, so the event can start promptly. Dress is formal attire. WEB MASTER NEEDED ASAP! The new OSU chapter of Micro Air Vehicle (MAV) Club will be sending a team to the MAV Competition at the end of this year. But the club needs a Web master to revamp the current Web site before the competition. The goal of the Web site is to provide info about the team, the club, the vehicles, and the competition. YOU’RE INVITED TO THE PLACE “WHERE GREAT IDEAS COME TOGETHER.” OSU, the Corvallis-Benton Chamber Coalition, and the Corvallis chapter of the Software Association of Oregon (SAO) encourage all faculty and students to attend the sixth annual High Tech After Hours on Thursday, Nov 13, 1–8 pm, at the CH2M HILL Alumni Center on the OSU campus. This is the biggest gathering of high tech businesses and people in the Willamette Valley. “Open Innovation” is this year’s theme. ATTENTION MIME SENIORS: DON’T BE LEFT OFF THE COMPOSITE PHOTO! If you are graduating this year, please be sure to contact The Ball Studio in Corvallis to have your senior photograph taken (sitting fee $10–$15). The Design of Medical Devices Conference seeks original papers that demonstrate new technologies and applications in the field of medical device design. One-page preliminary papers are due: Jan 15, 2009. THE WME PROGRAM NEEDS THE HELP OF MIME FACULTY. The WME Program has received a renewal grant from Intel to fund undergraduate research for sophomore/junior women and underrepresented minority students in areas related to the semi-conductor and informational technology fields. (High achieving first year students may be accepted if there are funds available). The goal of this program is to encourage more students to attend graduate school. If you are able to host a student in your lab, contact Ellen Momsen (Ellen.momsen@oregonstate.edu). Students will receive stipends for 5–15 hrs/week ($10/hr). Students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA. Note: Students who have participated in this program in the past are not eligible this year.

IS THE 2009 SUMMER FACULTY RESEARCH PROGRAM FOR YOU? The Office of Naval Research (ONR) sponsors the Summer Faculty Research Program (SFRP) for US citizens who hold teaching or research appointments at US colleges and universities. These programs provide an opportunity for science and engineering faculty members to participate in research of mutual interest to the faculty member and professional peers at US Navy laboratories. The SFRP is an on-site, 10week program, beginning in May 2009. Stipends: $1400–$1900/week. Each fellow will be reimbursed for his/her personal travel for an optional preprogram visit to the sponsoring lab. Relocation assistance is provided to qualifying fellows. The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals (CBYX) is accepting applications from college students and recent graduates in engineering fields who are interested in experiencing German culture, workplace, and everyday life. Participants spend a year studying and working in their career fields (beginning in July 2009) while completely immersed in German language and culture. The scholarship includes: Two months of intensive German language training; a semester of study in the your career field at a German college or university; a five-month internship in your field with a German company; accommodations, airfare, health insurance, and monthly food stipends; and various program seminars in the US and Germany. UG/G  NEXT SUMMER, EXPLORE THE INTERACTION OF TECHNOLOGY AND POLICY IN WASHINGTON, DC. WISE (Washington Internships for Students of Engineering) offers a unique opportunity to junior- and senior-level engineering undergraduates and recent graduates who are beginning study in an engineering policy-related Master’s program. WISE interns will spend the summer (June 8–August 7, 2009) in Washington, DC, studying the interaction of technology and policy. Interns will learn how government officials make decisions on complex technological issues and how engineers can contribute to legislative and regulatory public policy decisions. Housing is provided on the George Washington University campus, and interns receive a stipend to assist with living and travel expenses. VIRGINIA TECH. Tenuretrack assistant professor in the Department of Engineering Science and Mechanics (ESM) at Virginia Tech. Must have a PhD or equivalent in a relevant area of science or engineering. Ideal candidate is expected to conduct innovative research in one or more fields of experimental mechanics including dynamics, solid mechanics, or fluid mechanics; expected to demonstrate a broad scholarly interest in engineering with a special emphasis on fundamental mechanics; and have an interest in developing or interfacing experimental mechanics measurements and analysis procedures within the domain of energy (e.g., fuel cells, renewable energy, energy conversion, clean energy, or energy storage) or biology (e.g., cellular mechanics, soft tissue mechanics, macromolecular biology, biodynamics, or biofluids).
