NEXT SUMMER, EXPLORE THE
INTERACTION OF TECHNOLOGY AND POLICY IN WASHINGTON, DC.
WISE (Washington Internships for
Students of Engineering) offers a unique opportunity to junior- and
senior-level engineering undergraduates and recent graduates who are beginning
study in an engineering policy-related Master’s program. WISE interns will
spend the summer (June 8–August 7, 2009) in Washington, DC, studying the
interaction of technology and policy. Interns will learn how government
officials make decisions on complex technological issues and how engineers can
contribute to legislative and regulatory public policy decisions. Housing is
provided on the George Washington University campus, and interns receive a
stipend to assist with living and travel expenses. Application for WISE
internships is done through the sponsoring societies (AIChE, ANS, ASHRAE, ASME,

DON’T FORGET TO VOTE BY TUES,
NOV 4th! As you probably
know, November 4th is the General Election. In order for your
vote to be counted, your ballot must be received by a County Elections Office
or deposited in an official ballot drop site no later than 8:00 PM on Tuesday (11/4). Postmarks do not count. As of now, it is
too late to mail in your ballot. You need to bring your ballot to the Valley
Library drop site (Monday, Nov 3rd, 7:30 am–1:00 am, or Tuesday, Nov
4th, 7:30 am–8:00 pm) or use one of the other official ballot drop
sites. For a list of other Benton County official ballot drop sites click here.
If your ballot is not from Benton County, you may still drop off your ballot at

JOIN THE 2nd BEAVER
BAR-CAMP! Bar-camps are “unconferences.”
Come share ideas, give “tech talks” on your projects or interests, visit
hands-on workshops, relax, work on projects or homework, and, most of all,
enjoy learning new things. There will be a variety of people, ranging from
industry executives to all levels of students and faculty. Talk to others about
anything from programming, to electronics, to crocheting, to Platonic solids.
There will be something for everybody. Plus—food! Event takes place in the

NEW EMERGENCY ALERT SYSTEM FOR OSU FACULTY, STAFF, AND STUDENTS.
Have you checked out your contact info in OSU's new emergency alert system? This
system will be used by OSU Public Safety to create emergency alerts in
situations including: Active Shooter, Fire, Flood, Weather Advisory, Weather
Caused Closure/Altered Schedule, Health Emergency, Power Failure, Bomb Threat,
and General Emergency. OSU will conduct the first test of this system on Nov 10, and for it to be as successful
as possible, faculty, staff and students should all have complete contact info.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE FIRST
ROUND OF OSU ARCS SCHOLARS—TWO FROM MIME. The Portland Chapter of the
national ARCS
(Achievement Rewards for College Scientists) Foundation has named four CoE
students as 2008 ARCS Scholars, and two of them are from the School of MIME!
PhD candidates Sarah
Oman, working with Dr.
Irem Tumer on Creativity and Visualization in the Early Stages of
Engineering Design, and Eric
Patterson, working with Dr.
David Cann on Novel Lead(Pb)-Free Piezoelectric Materials, will each
receive $5,000/yr for the next three years or until the completion of their
doctoral degree (whichever comes first). This is the first year ARCS has
awarded scholarships at OSU. Sarah, Eric, and the other two OSU awardees (Wade
Marcum, NE, and Jacob Postman, ECE) are being honored at the annual ARCS

THE 2008 JOE HENDRICKS UHC SCHOLARSHIP WINNER, TRISTAN WAGNER! IE senior Tristan
Wagner has been awarded the first Joe Hendricks Scholarship, established
last spring by the University Honors College in honor of its founding dean, Joe
Hendricks, who led the college since its inception in 1995 until his retirement
last January. The nomination for this $2500 scholarship award was submitted by Dr.
David Kim, with whom Tristan is currently working on research related to economic replacement models, as are used to
minimize total vehicle purchase/maintenance costs for the ODOT fleet. [posted 10/27]
TEACH FOR AMERICA IS LOOKING FOR
HIGH ACHIEVERS FROM ALL ACADEMIC MAJORS. Teach For America is a non-profit
that enlists future leaders in the fight against educational inequity. Help
close the achievement gap by teaching for two years in a low-income
community. Salaries vary by district. TFA has developed extensive partnerships
with graduate schools and corporations like Deloitte and Google to help
transition their teachers into those sectors after the two-year teaching commitment.

THE WME PROGRAM NEEDS THE HELP OF MIME FACULTY. The WME Program has received a renewal
grant from Intel to fund undergraduate
research for sophomore/junior women and underrepresented minority students
in areas related to the semi-conductor and informational technology fields.
(High achieving first year students may be accepted if there are funds
available). The goal of this program is to encourage more students to attend
graduate school. If you are able to host a student in your lab, contact Ellen Momsen (Ellen.momsen@oregonstate.edu). Students
will receive stipends for 5–15 hrs/week ($10/hr). Students must have a minimum
3.0 GPA. Note: Students who have
participated in this program in the past are not eligible this year.

NOMINATE A STUDENT FOR THE
2009 BARRY M. GOLDWATER SCHOLARSHIP. The scholarship is awarded
to college students intending to pursue careers in science, mathematics, or
engineering. The scholarship covers tuition, fees, books, and room & board,
