Logendran Gets Best Paper Award at ICOVACS

Congratulations to R. Logen Logendran, professor of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering in the School of MIME, who recently received a Best Paper award for a paper presented at the 2009 International Conference on Value Chain Sustainability (ICOVACS), held in Louisville, KY, in October. Entries were evaluated on both paper content and presentation. The paper, titled “A Meta-Heuristic Algorithm for Flexible Flow Shop Sequence-Dependent Group Scheduling Problem,” was coauthored with one of Logendran’s former PhD students, Nasser Salmasi (currently an assistant professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering at Sharif University of Technology, Tehran, Iran) and Nasser’s graduate student, Omid Shahvari. The conference was well attended with significant international participation from Colombia, Hong Kong, Spain, France, The Netherlands, Turkey, Korea, Germany, Poland, and the US.

They Built, They Brought, They Chunked, and the Winners Are…

At last Friday’s Punkin Chunkin’ 2009 Happening at Madison Field, five pumpkin-hurling devices were put to the test as an impressive crowd of spectators, cheerleaders, and media representatives looked on. Each hurled pumpkin (up to 5 per contestant) earned 5 points for crossing the set-up line; 25 points for landing (or rolling to) within 10 ft of the target; or 50 points for arriving within 3 ft of the target. In addition, the hurling devices could earn up to 20 points in each of the following categories: conceptual design, safety, execution, and entertainment. Some observers might argue that a fifth category, “bribing talents” may possibly also have come into play, but in any case, at the end of the day, contestants were awarded the following scores by Dr. Bill Warnes, who judged the competition (and would certainly have been immune to any bribery that might have been attempted):

  • "Friends of Brant" [Clawson] with a Roman Onager: 91 points
  • Eric Hyde and Levi Silts with a human powered inner tube slingshot: 70 points
  • Todd Rautenkranz with a come-along controlled fully indexed slingshot design: 70 points
  • Matt Chiasson with a roller mounted come-along slingshot: 60 points
  • Jesse Grimes with a come-along fired multi-bungee pumpkin railgun: 95 points and the ONLY design that hit the target, but disqualified for being slightly oversized.

Congratulations to all the competitors, many thanks to Judge Warnes, and kudos to ASME for organizing this gala event. Rumor has it that next year's Punkin' Chunkin' will be even bigger and better (the spectators are clamoring for larger pumpkins too), and we expect to see a reappearance of the Roman Onager!

EWB Benefit Banquet this Friday, Nov. 6th: You’re Invited

Engineers Without Borders (EWB) supports community-driven development programs worldwide through the design and implementation of sustainable engineering projects; for participating students, involvement in this international organization provides hands-on engineering experience and fosters responsible leadership.

Every year, the OSU-EWB El Salvador project group hosts an annual fall benefit banquet to generate the financial support necessary to deliver clean water in the rural Salvadoran communities of El Naranjito and Las Mercedes. Over the past four years, this group has traveled to these communities eight times, and another trip is planned for this December to complete the construction of a gravity-fed water system to the sub-community of Lower Las Mercedes. This phase of the project involves building a water filtration system and water storage tank close to the community. Overall, the project will provide water for forty community members and has an estimated cost of $10,000.

Although times are hard and the economy has made charitable donations more difficult to make, we invite you to take this opportunity to help those in need. The OSU-EWB benefit banquet on Friday, November 6, is pivotal to the success of the El Salvador water project and will enable students to travel to El Salvador in December.

For more information, please visit the EWB website.
