Congratulations
to the First Round of OSU ARCS Scholars—Two from MIME
The Portland Chapter of the national ARCS
(Achievement Rewards for College Scientists) Foundation has named four CoE
students as 2008 ARCS Scholars, and two of them are from the School of MIME!
PhD candidates Sarah
Oman, working with Dr. Irem Tumer on Creativity and
Visualization in the Early Stages of Engineering Design, and Eric Patterson,
working with Dr. David Cann on Novel Lead(Pb)-Free
Piezoelectric Materials, will each receive $5,000/yr for the next three years
or until the completion of their doctoral degree (whichever comes first). This
is the first year ARCS has awarded scholarships at OSU. Sarah, Eric, and the
other two OSU awardees (Wade Marcum, NE, and Jacob Postman, ECE) are being
honored at the annual ARCS luncheon in Portland this Wednesday (10/29).
…and
Congratulations, Too, to the 2008 Joe Hendricks UHC Scholarship Winner, Tristan
Wagner!
IE senior Tristan Wagner has been awarded the first
Joe Hendricks Scholarship, established last spring by the University Honors
College in honor of its founding dean, Joe Hendricks, who led the college since
its inception in 1995 until his retirement last January. The nomination for
this $2500 scholarship award was submitted by Dr. David Kim, with whom
Tristan is currently working on research related to economic replacement models, as are used to minimize total vehicle
purchase/maintenance costs for the ODOT fleet.
Another Successful
EECS–MIME Senior Dinner: Thanks to All MIME Participants
Dear MIME Senior Dinner
attendees: Thank you
for participating in last week’s dinner and contributing to the success of this
year’s event. The company reps with whom I’ve since conversed all had a great
time and spoke highly of their interactions with you. Thanks also to Dr. Batten
for em-ceeing the event, Drs. Logendran and Cann for chairing one of the grad school tables, Jennifer de Guzman
for taking photos, and Pi Tau Sigma and ASME for assistance with check-in and
the pre-dinner social gathering. As always, we couldn’t have pulled this off
without the help and involvement of all of you!
And to all MIME
students: Be sure to
save the date of February 18th
(evening before the Winter Engineering Career Fair) for this year’s EECS–MIME
Industry Reception, another annual networking & recruiting event that is
open to all MIME and EECS students, freshman to graduate. More information on
the reception will be coming your way early next term.
Sincerely,
Tracy Ann Robinson
