Ever Get a Yen to Send Some Pumpkins Flying? Now’s Your
Chance!
This Friday, October
30th, the OSU chapter of ASME will hold its third, almost-annual
Pumpkin
Chunkin’ Event. Everyone is invited to
participate in this age-old mechanical engineering tradition!!!
What: The idea is to construct a device
that can send a pumpkin hurtling toward a target some 50 yards away. The closer
to the target your pumpkins lands or smashes, the more points you get. First-,
second-, and third-place prizes will be awarded.
Where: Madison Field (east of 11th
St. between Madison and Monroe)
When: 2 pm until the final pumpkin launch.
*If possible, please arrive at the field between 1 and 2 pm for registration
and device inspection.*
Device Requirements:
- Your assembled device must be no
larger than 6 ft x 6 ft x 6 ft. (If it is a throwing contraption, however,
the throwing arm may extend beyond these parameters).
- The device may *not* use
gas-powered engines, compressed air, or any other “explosive” type of
propellant.
- Each contestant may hurl up to
five pumpkins, and there is no limitations on
pumpkin size.
- Safety is our first concern, so
if your device is deemed unsafe for any reason, you will not be able to
use it to fling pumpkins, but it will be rated on its design-worthiness.
If you plan to enter the competition, feel free to contact
ASME chair Matt Chiasson with any
questions and to help him get an approximate contestant head count.
Naturally, spectators and cheering squads are also encouraged
to attend the ASME Pumpkin Chunkin’ extravaganza.
Remember: 2 pm,
Friday Oct. 30th, Madison Field. Start working on your
contraptions now, and see you on at the end of the week!
MIME Faculty And Grad
Students: Pull Out Your Cleats and Shin Guards…
The OSU Chapter of IIE has once again challenged
MIME faculty and graduate students to a friendly, if also extremely highly
competitive, encounter on the pitch.
This year’s match will be on Dec 4 at 4 pm in the
McAlexander Fieldhouse. As proud
holders of an undefeated record in this annual sporting contest, we the MIME
faculty need now to uphold our reputation as the finest athletes around. For
more information and to sign up—ESPECIALLY to sign up—please contact Toni Doolen.
