Welcome to Engineering Awareness Week!

 

If you are unsure about which engineering major is right for you, want to get a better feel for your chosen major, and/or want to learn more about Oregon State University’s engineering programs and research, then plan to attend this week’s hour-long Engineering Awareness sessions that are happening at 6 and 7 pm Monday through Thursday.  Click here for the session schedule and locations.

                          

 

 

If You’re Considering Graduate School…

 

…be sure to attend the “Applying to Graduate School” Panel Discussion on Thursday, Oct. 15, 4:30–5:30 pm in STAG 323. This is a great opportunity for students to learn more about the application process and factors you should consider when deciding to attend graduate or professional school.  Open to all majors and interest areas.  

                          

 

Interested in Studying Abroad for a Year and Earning Two Bachelor’s of Science Degrees?

 

This Friday, October 16, the ATLANTIS Exchange Program will host an information session 4–5 pm in Covell 117.  Join us for coffee and cookies, and learn about this outstanding opportunity for ME undergraduates to spend a year studying in Europe as part of earning TWO bachelors’ degrees.  ATLANTIS Program participants study mechanical engineering at OSU and materials science at Saarlandes University in Saarbrücken, Germany and Luleå University of Technology in Luleå, Sweden. There's even a travel stipend available to help offset the costs of the program. If you'd like to learn more, please come to this information session, where you’ll meet  faculty from all three participating institutions. LOST SOMETHING?  The lost and found for MIME is located in 102 Dearborn.  Please go there to turn in items or check for items you are missing.

 

NEW HOURS FOR THE MIME GRADUATE AND BUSINESS CENTER OFFICE (Rogers 204). As of Monday, Oct 12, the MIME Graduate Student Services Office and the Business Center Office in Rogers 204 will be open 7:30 am–4:30 pm (instead of 8 am–5 pm).  This schedule change affects the offices of Jean Robinson, Phyllis Helvie, Shaun Bromagem, and Miranda Hennan.

 

STUDENT SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVE: CALL FOR STUDENT PROJECT GRANT APPLICATIONS.  As a student, you can apply for a sustainability related project grant.  There is $12,000 available for next year in grants and any single project may apply for up to $6,000 dollars.  Projects should align with the SSI mission of "Supporting student efforts to create a sustainable community at OSU through opportunity, education, and action." Send completed application form to Kyle Ireton, 2009-10 SSI Fee Board chair, by November 13.

 

CAREER DECISION-MAKING THROUGH A HOLISTIC MODEL.  Career Services, together with CAPS, is offering a 3-week workshop series on “Career Decision-Making through a Holistic Model.” Workshop dates are Oct 28, Nov 4, and Nov 1; All session take place 3=4:30 pm in the Career Services classroom (B 008 Kerr).  Students will take the MBTI and Strong Interest Inventory as a part of the group ($14 for each assessment; total cost is $28). The group will address the following:

     Exploration of your career interests and values

     Exploration of your personality and how this affects career development

     The importance of balance

     The importance of cultural identity in knowing yourself and your career

L.L. STEWART FACULTY DEVELOPMENT AWARDS.  The L.L. Stewart Faculty Development Award provides individual faculty members with grants of up to $2,200 for professional development activities that have a clear connection to the enhancement of teaching and student learning at OSU. Two grants in the amount of $4,400 may also be considered for exceptionally compelling and well-written proposals. Academic advising-related proposals are welcome. Applications are due November 2 and are evaluated jointly by the Advancement of Teaching Committee of the Faculty Senate and the Center for Teaching and Learning.  If you have any questions, contact Evelyn Riat.

TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY.  Tenure-track faculty position in Dynamics, Systems and Controls.  Applicants are sought primarily at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, but a Full Professor will also be considered.  Applicants must have an earned doctorate in Mechanical Engineering or an appropriate closely-related discipline.  Expertise is desired in autonomous vehicles, optimization of advanced energy systems, micro-turbines, or sensor development for energy or transportation systems are especially encouraged to apply.   It is anticipated that the appointment will begin Fall 2010.  For more information, click here.

 

MIAMI UNIVERSITY.  Miami University’s School of Engineering and Applied Science seeks applicants for a tenure track position in mechanical and manufacturing engineering beginning fall 2010.  Applicants for the position are expected to teach undergraduates, conduct labs, conduct research, perform service and advise students in the mechanical engineering program and related engineering programs.  A Ph.D. in mechanical engineering or related fields is expected; ABDs will be accepted, but the doctorate must be completed by the time of appointment.  Application screening began October 1 and will continue until the position is filled.  Click here or contact Professor Errol Gundler for more information.

 

NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY.  The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Department of Mechanical Engineering are jointly seeking an outstanding individual in the area of mechanics for a tenure-track position at the level of assistant professor.  Applicants should have an earned doctorate in Civil or Mechanical Engineering or in a relevant engineering or science discipline.  To receive full consideration, all materials should be received by December 15, 2009.
