MIME FACULTY KUDOS

 

Congratulations to Drs. Jay Kruzic and Bill Warnes, recent awardees of EU Erasmus Mundus programme scholarships. These scholarships cover travel and lodging costs for a 1-month exchange at an EU University. Both Kruzic and Warnes plan to spend their month in Saarbruecken, Germany, doing research and teaching in the Materials Science program at the University of Saarlandes.

 

The Erasmus Mundus programme aims to enhance quality in European higher education and to promote intercultural understanding through co-operation with third countries by supporting the scholarly work of both European and third country scholars, including graduate students. NOW YOU CAN SCHEDULE YOUR ADVISING APPOINTMENTS ONLINE!

 

MIME undergraduate advising starts next Monday, Oct 13th, and is required for all ME, IME, and GenEngr students. To schedule your advising appointment, go to the Undergraduate Advising & Program Planning page and click on “Overview: Undergraduate Advising Process.” (You will need to log in with your ENGR login name and password).

 

**IMPORTANT: Be sure to schedule your appointments at least 24 hours in advance. Before scheduling, check the advisor listing to be sure you set up your appointment with the right person. Check the advisors listing here:

·         IME, and Gen Engr students

 

Come to your advising appointment with a tentative schedule worked out (using the Undergraduate Advising Guide as a reference) and a list of questions for your advisor. At the appointment, your advisor will:

·         Review your performance with you and update your file.

·         Recommend courses for you to take next term.

·         Give you your new registration PIN so you can register for next term.

 

SOPHOMORES: You will be applying to Pro-School. You must calculate your current Pre-Core GPA and bring two copies to your advising appointment. Students who do not bring these to their appointment will need to RESCHEDULE! The GPA Calculator is available here.

WANT TO BUILD A PROJECT, BUT CAN’T FIND THE RIGHT TOOLS? TechShop is a large membership-based workshop that provides members with access to tools and equipment, instruction, and a creative and supportive community. The first Techshop opened in 2006 in Menlo Park. A new Techshop facility is opening in Portland (http://portland.techshop.ws). The organization is looking at potential satellite sites, including Corvallis. The Portland Techshop coordinator has offered to come down to Corvallis and give a presentation about Techshop with the goal of determining whether we have critical mass for developing and supporting a local facility. Bell Memorial Graduate Student Loan Program provides non-need-based loans to enrolled graduate students to assist with educational and/or research expenses associated with their advanced degrees. UG/G  RESEARCH GRANT OPPORTUNITY FOR UPPER-DIVISION UNDERGRADS AND EARLY GRADS. EcoInformatics, the integration of mathematics, computer science, statistics, and engineering with the study and management of ecosystems, is an emerging science with a critical need for well-trained, interdisciplinary scientists. This summer, OSU will offer 15 students to work with faculty mentors on 10-week research projects that advance knowledge and understanding of old-growth forests, streams, and other native ecosystems through the EcoInformatics Summer Institute (EISI), held at the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest in the Oregon Cascades, June 15–August 21, 2009. G SEVERAL ETS FELLOWSHIP AND INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS. 2009-2010 Educational Testing Service (ETS) Fellowship and Internship Programs seek applicants with a doctoral degree or are enrolled in a doctoral program in one of the following: measurement theory, validity, natural language processing and computational linguistics, cognitive psychology, learning theory, linguistics, speech recognition and processing, teaching and classroom research, statistics, and international large scale assessments. G UDALL FOUNDATION’S 2009 ENVIRONMENTAL PUBLIC POLICY & CONFLICT RESOLUTION DISSERTATION FELLOWSHIP. The Foundation awards two 1-year fellowships, up to $24,000, to doctoral candidates entering their final year of writing the dissertation, whose research concerns US environmental public policy and/or environmental conflict resolution. UG/G 6TH ANNUAL P3 AWARDS: A NATIONAL STUDENT DESIGN COMPETITION FOR SUSTAINABILITY. Focusing on People, Prosperity and the Planet.” The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as part of the P3 Award Program, is seeking proposals to research, develop, and design solutions to real world challenges involving the overall sustainability of human society. UG/G NEW PRGORAM FOR TRAVEL GRANTS TO YOUNG SCIENTISTS. The Binational Science Foundation (BSF) is announcing the availability of funds for short scientific trips by young American scientists to Israel (and Israeli scientists to America). In 2009, 10 $4,000 grants will be awarded. The program is focused on students and post-doc fellows doing research that requires facilities or expertise that are not available in their home country. G NEW UNIVERSITY GRADUATE LAURELS BLOCK GRANT PROGRAM. This program provides graduate programs increased flexibility to incorporate and effectively manage University Graduate Laurels Scholarships within their own graduate student financial support strategies. G PRESIDENTIAL MANAGEMENT FELLOWS (PMF) PROGRAM. The PMF Program is a rigorous 2-year paid experience for students from all academic disciplines who expect to complete a master’s, law, or doctoral degree from a qualifying college/university during the current academic year (ending Aug 31, 2009). Fellows work for Federal agencies and gain exposure to domestic and international issues in such areas as public administration, technology, science, criminal justice, health and financial management. There is a 2-step application process: (1) Submit a PMF application via USAJOBS by 11:59:59 pm (ET), Oct 15, 2008. Access USAJOBS via the “How to Apply” section at www.pmf.opm.gov. (2) Submit the following materials to OSU’s Nominating Official, Mary Strickroth (care of the Graduate School), no later than close of business on Thurs, Oct 16, 2008: Applicant’s statement of purpose addressing how PMF program criteria have been met (no more than 2 pages); PMF Nomination Form (OPM Form 1300) including resume; and a letter of recommendation from the applicant’s major professor. UG/G DEED PROGRAM. The American Public Power Association's Demonstration of Energy-Efficient Developments (DEED) Program is offering up to ten $4000 Student Research grants/internships to undergraduate/graduate students who are conducting research on energy-related projects. Awardees must be sponsored by a DEED member utility. The DEED Program also offers one $5000 Technical Design Project (TDP) scholarship to an individual or group of students working on an energy related project. The TDP scholarship is geared toward senior design students and also provides recipients with travel reimbursement up to $3000 to present their project at the annual APPA Engineering and Operations Technical Conference. For both types of awards, eligibility is limited to students studying in energy-related disciplines at accredited US and Canadian colleges and universities, and a mid-project report, final report and abstract are required. 2008 application deadline: Oct 15, 2008. UG BENJAMIN A. GILMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM, SPRING 2009. The Gilman International Scholarship Program provides awards up to $5,000 for US undergraduate students to study abroad. The program serves students who have been under-represented in study abroad, including: students with high financial need, community college students, students in under-represented fields such as the sciences and engineering, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds, students attending minority-serving institutions, and students with disabilities. In academic year 2008–09, over 1200 scholarships will be granted. WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY. Post Doctoral Research position with specialty in Computational Fluid Dynamics (position number 090801-Huebsch) at the College of Engineering and Mineral Resources, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. The Fellow will primarily work on modeling of fluid dynamics and heat transfer in a two-phase flow environment. A doctoral degree in ME or closely related area is required. Knowledge and experience, in the following areas required: (1) CFD, (2) two-phase flows, and (3) heat transfer. Knowledge in Fluent, UDF development, reduced-order modeling and modeling of cooling tower flows are preferred. Initial appointment can start as early as October 2008 with responsibility for one year with potential to extend, subject to availability of funds. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications. Evaluation of candidates will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.
