Attention ME Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors: WE NEED YOUR
HELP!
Mechanical Engineering Students: We still need volunteers to
help lead the ME sessions during Engineering Awareness Week. These sessions
run 6–7 pm and 7–8 pm on Monday, Oct 12,
in Dearborn and Rogers. Volunteers are needed to take tour groups around
to several ME facilities (4 tour leaders
needed for each session) and to provide general help with running the sessions
(3-4 volunteers needed for each session).
This fun, fast-paced event is designed to inform first-year
College of Engineering students about the ME program. Please consider helping
out! To volunteer, contact Matt
Chiasson ASAP.
Note: An organizational meeting for
session volunteers will be held this Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 4 pm in Rogers 238A.
Winter Pro-School Application Now Available
The application
process for Winter 2010 admission into the OSU Professional Engineering Program
is now open, and the online application form is available on the COE application Web site. Deadline to apply is November 2.
RSVP This Week for Nov. 6th Hanard Machine Tour
The OSU chapter of
ASME is sponsoring a field trip to
Hannard Machine Inc on Friday, Nov. 6th, 1–4:30 pm. Established in
1968 in Salem, Ore., Hanard Machine is one of the Northwest’s premier job and machine shops. The
company specializes in CNC milling and turning, turning and fabrication
supporting such a variety of industries; rare metals machining and fabrication;
and more. Visit their Web site here.
We’ll meet at 1 pm on Nov. 6th to carpool up to
Salem (using OSU vans) for a 2 pm tour of the facilities and conversation on
topics of interest to trip participants. We expect to be back on campus by 4:30
pm.

kick-off event to the 2010 Enterprise Challenge (where possible prize money
totals $17,500) and targets students who are potentially interested
in commercializing their senior projects. This
is an opportunity to meet other students, hear ideas, get help with your idea,

ENGINEERING AWARENESS WEEK. We need 5–10 ME juniors and seniors to help
with the ME Engineering Awareness sessions on Oct 12, 6–7 pm and 7–8 pm in
Dearborn 118. This is a great opportunity to talk to incoming engineering
students about your experience in the ME program. Also if you belong to a club
or organization, this is a good opportunity for recruiting! If you would like

INTERESTED IN INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS PROGRAMS? For those interested in exploring
opportunities for advanced study in international affairs, Career Services is
hosting a reception that features five top IA graduate programs on Monday Oct.
5, 4–5 pm in STAG 203. Admissions
representatives from Columbia University’s School of International and Public
Affairs, Georgetown University’s Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service, Johns
Hopkins University’s Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies,

great resources to help you with your research.

subject librarian to get information, you can also attend free workshops on
topics such as Literature Reviews, EndNote (bibliography program), Graduate
Student Financial Support, and Zotero (web-based citation management). Register early,

ATTN FACULTY: OPPORTUNITY TO ADVERTISE REUs AND SUMMER RESEARCH
OPPORTUNITIES. The California Forum
for Diversity in Graduate Education at UC Santa Cruz targets advanced
undergraduates and master’s candidates who belong to groups that are
underserved in doctoral-level programs. Students who attend this conference are
very interested in research experiences for undergraduates and summer research
opportunity programs. If you offer such a program(s) and wish to advertise it

SCHOLARSHIPS, FELLOWSHIPS, AND

OFFICE OF SCIENCE GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM. Up to $12.5 million in funding
from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will be awarded in early 2010
to support at least 80 three-year, $50,500-per-year graduate fellowships to
U.S. students pursuing advanced degrees in science, mathematics, and
engineering through the newly created Department of Energy Office of Science
Graduate Fellowship program. The goal of the fellowship program is to encourage
outstanding students to pursue graduate degrees in physics, chemistry, biology,
mathematics, engineering, and environmental and computer sciences – fields that
will prepare students for careers that can make significant contributions in
discovery driven science and science for national needs in energy and the
environment. To be eligible for the Fellowship, applicants must be U.S. citizens
and currently a first or second year graduate student enrolled at a U.S.
academic institution, or an undergraduate senior who will be enrolled as a
first year graduate student by the fall of 2010. Applicants must be
pursuing graduate study and research in the physical, biological, engineering
and computational sciences. Application deadline:

G DELSON BRIDGE TO THE FUTURE FUND. This is designed to
assist students in the final phase of their graduate education to pay research
expenses, publication costs, and other incidentals that stand in the way of
completing their studies. Award: Up to $500 per recipient. Procedure:
Departments and programs must submit nominations (students cannot apply
directly for this award). If you qualify for this award,

G NON-NEED-BASED LOANS AVAILABLE TO GRADS. The Jesse M.
Bell Memorial Graduate Student Loan Program provides non-need-based loans to
enrolled graduate students to assist with educational and/or research expenses
associated with their advanced degrees. Both domestic and international
degree-seeking graduate students may be considered. Loans up to $5,000 are
