Wed Oct 1: Campus Research Tour” Brownbag Lunch w/ Prof. Bill Lunch. 12:30–1:30 pm. Meet outside bookstore, Jefferson St. entrance. The campus walking tour will touch on some of the history of Oregon State, but will emphasize the politics and funding patterns that have been and are vital to key research programs, colleges, and departments at OSU. Among them are connections between the campus and NOAA (Sea Grant); the land-grant role of OSU (Agriculture and Forestry); and the relationship of the campus to the National Endowment for the Arts. OSU's role in the state and relations with governors and the state legislature will also be briefly discussed. Students from all disciplines are welcome. No registration required.

REMINDER: NEW CoE GRADE POLICY. Beginning this term, students in the College of Engineering must achieve a grade of “C” or better before beginning of the term of admission to the Professional Program. S/U grading may not be elected. Also, with this new policy, if you take an OSU course twice, the first grade is replaced by the second for GPA calculations in the College of Engineering. THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE INSTITUTE AT OSU NEEDS YOU! The English Language Institute (ELI) is looking for English speakers to become conversant volunteers. As a conversant you help an international student practice speaking English and adjust to life in the US. ELI needs OSU students, staff and faculty to be a part of this program. Volunteer one hour, once a week, for the 2008 fall term. The day, time, and meeting place are decided by you and your ELI student. Make a new friend, learn about a new culture, gain multicultural experience, add a great item to your resume and graduate or professional school applications, and HAVE FUN!! More than 120 new ELI students are expected to arrive for fall term, and ELI would love to be able to offer each student a conversant. INTERESTED IN STARTING YOUR OWN BUSINESS? BA 199: “Austin Enterprises” is a class for any student interested in starting their own business. The Austin Entrepreneurship Program, (AEP) is presenting a new course designed for OSU students who want to take an idea and turn it into a business. This year-long 6-credit course (2 credits per quarter) covers the fundamentals of launching a venture, and provides students the opportunity to road test their venture in a structured environment under the supervision of a seasoned entrepreneur. Meeting time and place: Monday 4–5:50 pm, Weatherford EG 01. AIR FORCE SUMMER FACULTY FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM (SFFP) offers hands-on exposure to Air Force research challenges through eight (8) to twelve (12) week research residencies at participating Air Force Research Facilities for full-time science and engineering faculty at US colleges and universities. US–ISRAEL BINATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (BSF) CALL FOR PROPOSALS:

·   Research grant applications. To qualify for BSF grants, proposals must demonstrate a plan for active collaboration between American and Israeli scientists, and be of excellent scientific merit as judged by peer review. OFFICE OF NAVAL RESEARCH (ONR) SUMMER FACULTY RESEARCH PROGRAM. DEADLINE BUMPED UP FOR THE L.L. STEWART FACULTY DEVELOPMENT AWARD. The deadline for applications for the L.L. Stewart Faculty Development Award has been changed from October 31st to October 8th. The LL Stewart Award provides individual faculty members with grants of up to $2,200 for professional development activities that have a clear connection to the enhancement of teaching and student learning at OSU. UG/G 6TH ANNUAL P3 AWARDS: A NATIONAL STUDENT DESIGN COMPETITION FOR SUSTAINABILITY. Focusing on People, Prosperity and the Planet. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as part of the P3 Award Program, is seeking applications proposing to research, develop, and design solutions to real world challenges involving the overall sustainability of human society. The P3 competition highlights the use of scientific principles in creating innovative projects focused on sustainability. The P3 Awards program was developed to foster progress toward sustainability by achieving the mutual goals of economic prosperity, protection of the planet, and improved quality of life for its people. UG/G NEW PRGORAM FOR TRAVEL GRANTS TO YOUNG SCIENTISTS. The Binational Science Foundation (BSF) is announcing the availability of funds for short scientific trips by young American scientists to Israel (and Israeli scientists to America). In 2009, which is the first year of this new program, 10 grants will be awarded, each for $4,000. The program is focused on students and post-doc fellows doing research that requires facilities or expertise that are not available in their home country. G NEW UNIVERSITY GRADUATE LAURELS BLOCK GRANT PROGRAM. This program provides graduate programs increased flexibility to incorporate and effectively manage University Graduate Laurels Scholarships within their own graduate student financial support strategies. G PRESIDENTIAL MANAGEMENT FELLOWS (PMF) PROGRAM. The PMF Program is a rigorous two-year paid experience for students from all academic disciplines who expect to complete an advanced degree (master’s, law, or doctoral degree) from a qualifying college or university during the current academic year (ending Aug 31, 2009.) Fellows work for Federal agencies and gain exposure to domestic and international issues in such areas as public administration, technology, science, criminal justice, health and financial management. 

 

There is a two-step application process: (1) Submit a PMF application via USAJOBS no later than 11:59:59 p.m. (Eastern Time), Oct 15, 2008. Access to USAJOBS may be obtained through the “How to Apply” section at www.pmf.opm.gov. Note: The PMF application opens Wed, Oct 1. (2) Submit the following materials to OSU’s Nominating Official, Mary Strickroth (mary.strickroth@oregonstate.edu OR 541-737-4881)], (care of the Graduate School) no later than close of business on Thurs, Oct 16, 2008: Applicant’s statement of purpose addressing how PMF program criteria have been met (no more than 2 pages); PMF Nomination Form (OPM Form 1300) including resume; and a letter of recommendation from the applicant’s major professor. UG/G DEED PROGRAM. The American Public Power Association's Demonstration of Energy-Efficient Developments (DEED) Program is offering up to ten $4000 Student Research grants/internships to undergraduate/graduate students who are conducting research on energy-related projects. Awardees must be sponsored by a DEED member utility. The DEED Program also offers one $5000 Technical Design Project (TDP) scholarship to an individual or group of students working on an energy related project. The TDP scholarship is geared toward senior design students and also provides recipients with travel reimbursement up to $3000 to present their project at the annual APPA Engineering and Operations Technical Conference. For both types of awards, eligibility is limited to students studying in energy-related disciplines at accredited US and Canadian colleges and universities, and a mid-project report, final report and abstract are required. 2008 application deadline: Oct 15, 2008. UG BENJAMIN A. GILMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM, SPRING 2009. The Gilman International Scholarship Program provides awards of up to $5,000 for US undergraduate students to study abroad for up to one academic year. The program serves students who have been under-represented in study abroad, including: students with high financial need, community college students, students in under-represented fields such as the sciences and engineering, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds, students attending minority-serving institutions, and students with disabilities. In academic year 2008–09, over 1200 scholarships will be granted. WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY. Post Doctoral Research position with specialty in Computational Fluid Dynamics (position number 090801-Huebsch) at the College of Engineering and Mineral Resources, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. The Fellow will primarily work on modeling of fluid dynamics and heat transfer in a two-phase flow environment. A doctoral degree in ME or closely related area is required. Knowledge and experience, in the following areas required: (1) CFD, (2) two-phase flows, and (3) heat transfer. Knowledge in Fluent, UDF development, reduced-order modeling and modeling of cooling tower flows are preferred. Initial appointment can start as early as October 2008 with responsibility for one year with potential to extend, subject to availability of funds.
