KUDOS TO THREE MIME FACULTY

 

The American Society for Engineering Management recently appointed Dr. Toni Doolen as editor of the Engineering Management Journal. Read the press release here.

 

An article by Dr. Jay Kruzic, “Predicting Fatigue Failures,” appears in the July edition of Science, a journal of original scientific research, global news, and commentary. Read the abstract here.

 

And last but not least, Dr. Kagan Tumer has been awarded an NSF award from the Division of Information and Intelligent Systems for research on "Foundations of Multiagent Control in Complex Environments."

 

 

CONGRATS TO OSU FORMULA SAE TEAM,

AND GOOD LUCK AT EUROPEAN COMPETITION!

 

At the June 2009 Formula SAE competition in Los Angeles, OSU Beaver Racing finished 1st in the endurance and dynamic events and 2nd overall. Read more about their victory here. And last weekend, the team took part in the Formula Student Germany competition at Hockenheim Ring in Germany. The team is now headed to Melk, Austria for another competition this week. You can keep tabs on the team by following their blog. Good luck and go global beavs!

 

 

THE GRAAND KINETIC CHALLENGE RESULTS ARE IN!

 

At the 2009 da Vinci Days festival in July, an MIME student-built kinetic sculpture Co-op Cabana took home a variety of awards: the King of Kluck Choice award, the Engineering Fave #2 trophy, and the Port Townsend Mediocrity award. This kinetic sculpture—a 2008-09 MIME senior project—was designed and built by Todd Albertson, Bryan Goshert, and James Brown for the First Alternative Co-op in Corvallis. ATTENTION TOP UNDERGRAD AND GRAD STUDENTS: APPLY FOR THE CH2M HILL WATER RECRUITING EVENT. HOME STAY HOSTS NEEDED. INTO OSU is in need of home stay hosts to host one or two Japanese students from Toyo University for a three-night home stay (August 28–31). Students stay with area hosts in order to practice speaking English, to learn more about American culture and to make new friends. Home stay hosts may host one or two students. STUDENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR THE COE MENTORING PROGRAM. The Society of Women Engineering (SWE), the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) will offer mentoring to incoming students this fall, but they need current CoE students to volunteer as mentors. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND EDUCTIONAL SESSIONS. The Associated Students of OSU will be hosting professional development and educational sessions this summer for student employees, faculty, and staff working with student/incidental fee funded programs. Sessions are intended to: Help prepare students for the responsibilities they will face as leaders of student-run programs; increase knowledge of university programs and departments; raise awareness about resources; build skills around leadership, communication, management, event-planning, organizing, and many other topics; and build community among students who will face similar leadership opportunities and challenges in their positions. SCHOLARSHIPS, FELLOWSHIPS, AND RESEARCH INTERNSHIPS [back to top]

UG  EWEB Scholarships. As part of Eugene Water & Electric Board’s (EWEB) continuing effort to encourage a new generation of utility workers, EWEB will be offering two $1,250 scholarships to university students for the 2009–10 school year. Eligibility: EWEB customer (or customer’s dependent) and junior or senior standing with 3.5 GPA. Applicants must obtain at least two letters of recommendation from teachers, community leaders, and/or others. Application deadline: September 1. For more info, click here.

 

UG/G  AFTERCOLLEGE ENGINEERING STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP. AfterCollege is offering $500 scholarships to four engineering students currently seeking a bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate degree. Application deadline: Wednesday, September 30. Eligibility: Must be in good standing in an accredited program in the engineering or computer science field, must have and carry a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA, and must be a full-time student while under the scholarship. UG  UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLAR PROGRAM WITH THE CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY (CIA). The CIA has an Undergraduate Scholar Program that offers students an opportunity to challenge themselves. Students will complete work sessions during each summer break, increase their knowledge and job responsibilities while assisting intelligence professionals, and apply their academic skills. Once selected, students are given an annual salary; a benefits package that includes health, dental, and vision insurance, life insurance, and retirement; and up to $18,000 per calendar year for tuition and books. Seeking an operations specialist to help maintain and run the micrometeorological equipment associated with the US EPA Western Ecology Division’s Global Climate Change research facility. The position will be funded by Terrestrial Ecosystems Research Associates, a nonprofit organization that is leasing the facility to perform a four-year, asymmetric warming grassland experiment. The US EPA Western Ecology Division’s Terrestrial Ecophysiology Research Area is a facility that consists of a large greenhouse to shelter data acquisition and process control computers, and a field of 12 sunlit plant growth chambers. Temperature, dew point, and CO2 concentration are carefully controlled in each chamber by programmable microprocessors and associated hardware.
