A MIDSUMMER
NIGHT’S…E-BULLETIN
Hello all! Hope you’re having a good summer and
enjoying the seasonal sunshine and heat waves. This month’s e-bulletin is an
abbreviated version of what you might be used to, but we here at MIME felt you
might like an update on upcoming MIME-related summer events and current
postings on the MIME jobs & internships board. The weekly e-bulletins will
resume closer to the beginning of the 2008-09 school year. For now, enjoy the
rest of your summer and we’ll see you in the fall!
EXPERIENCE ENGINEERING AT
20th ANNUAL DA
VINCI DAYS FESTIVAL
For those of you who haven’t yet experienced
Corvallis’s legendary da Vinci Days Festival, this annual 3-day event celebrating
art, science, & technology is one of the brightest feathers
in our community’s summer cap. This year’s da Vinci Days run from Friday, July 18th to Sunday,
July 20th. Along with many other festival exhibits, performances, contests,
and events (including a Kinetic Sculpture Race that’s not to be missed!), the
College of Engineering will host a variety of displays and hands-on activities,
including Wave Energy, Bio-Diesel, Bio-Hydrogen, TekBots, Mini-Baja Car,
Segway, Gels & Goops, Bio-Nanotechnology, Accessible Transportation, and ZOOM
into Engineering. Located in the Discover OSU area on the lower campus (between
Monroe and Jefferson Avenues, extending from 14th/15th
Streets to 7th Street), the CoE booths will be open 10 am–5 pm on
both Saturday and Sunday. Come check us out!
Also,
the Kelley Engineering Center will be open for tours on Saturday (3 and 4 pm) and
Sunday (2 and 4 pm). And don’t miss Saturday’s Tsunami Structure Challenge, 2–4
pm at the Hinsdale Wave Research: design and build your own Tsunami resistant
structure and then see how it stands up to a Tsunami wave!

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BE AN
EFFECTIVE ALLY? Each person who has interest in or chooses to work for social justice
brings unique talents, skills and motives. Though it is often assumed that
being a good ally is a matter of choosing to care about
social justice, in fact most people find that there are new behaviors,
attitudes and strategies that must be learned over time. This session reviews some
common strategies for being an effective ally, looks at challenges related to
learning new habits, and takes a broad and inclusive view of how we can go
about adapting to everyday life as a result of new and changing knowledge. OSU
Student Advocate Christian Matheis will serve as the day's presenter and
facilitator. All levels of learners are encouraged to attend. Lunches are
welcome.
