2009 MIME COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY AND RECEPTION

 

The 2009 School of MIME Commencement Ceremony and Reception happens this Friday, June 12, in the LaSells Stewart Center’s Austin Auditorium, beginning promptly at 10:00 am. This special ceremony, held the day before OSU Commencement, honors all 2009 MIME graduates. Family and friends are welcome! Students should plan to arrive at the auditorium between 9:15 and 9:30 am, wearing their cap and gown. Note: The ceremony will run about 1 ½ hours and will be followed by a reception under the tents between LaSells and the CH2M Hill Alumni Center. Congratulations Class of 2009!

Undergrad/School-wide…

 

JOBS AVAILABLE WITH COE COMPUTER IT SUPPORT. The CoE IT team is hiring freshmen and sophomores currently pursuing an engineering degree. Primary roles include troubleshooting software and hardware problems as well as maintain and monitoring CoE computer labs. Approximately 10–20 hrs/week. Salary: $8.5/hr. Must have previous IT experience or general computer troubleshooting skills, be a self-starter and able to proactively address problems, be able to balance course and workloads efficiently, have excellent written and verbal communication skills, and be able to work effectively in a team environment. DEVELOP YOUR LEADERSHIP SKILLS BY MENTORING A FIRST- YEAR ENGINEERING STUDENT. To help ease the high school-to-college transition, the CoE’s Women & Minorities in Engineering program, along with the OSU chapters of SWE, SHPE, and NSBE, offers a mentoring experience for first-year female and minority students pursuing engineering careers. Mentors are paired with 1 or 2 freshmen and are expected to provide guidance and support to their mentees for one year. If you have questions or are interested in becoming a mentor, email Karena Dokken (dokkenk@onid.orst.edu) with the following information: Your name, major, year in school, gender, and organization you would like to mentor with (SWE, NSBE, or SHPE).

EXTENDED APPLICATION DEADLINE FOR SUMMER EWB-KENYA TRIP. Are you interested in ending poverty, improving health, and solving real world problems? Do you have a passport and a desire to make the world a better place? If so, here's your chance! The OSU chapter of Engineers Without Borders (EWB) is seeking students from all majors and professionals from all fields to travel to Kenya for ~2 weeks at the end of this summer. While in Kenya, you’ll be expected to work 10+ hours/day (often in hot, dry weather), but you’ll have the rare opportunity to live with local Kenyans, learn about Kenyan culture, and possibly learn and practice Swahili. EWB-OSU will reimburse students for all reasonable trip expenses (airfare, lodging, travel insurance, and food). For more info, applicant requirements, and the application, click here. SUMMER COURSE TO JUMPSTART YOUR THESIS OR DISSERTATION. WR 599: “Writing Workshop for Thesis and Dissertation Writers Across the University” is a 3-credit course for mater’s and PhD students to devote one week of their summer (August 16–21) to jump-start their thesis writing through intensive work on their own writing project, daily individual conferences with the professor, and group discussions of writing issues. Course is open to all grad students at the writing stage. Meeting place and times: Waldo 120, M–F 8:30 am–4 pm for 1-hour individual writing and conferencing, and then again 7–9 for group discussions. CRN: 71580. For the course catalog listing, click here. SUMMER SAS COURSE ON MIXED MODELS. ST 599: “Mixed Model Analysis Using SAS” is designed to help researchers use SAS to analyze data using mixed model procedures in SAS (primarily PROC MIXED). This is a 2-credit course that runs June 22–July 17. Instructor: Susan Alber (albers@stat.oregonstate.edu). Meeting time and place: MWF, 4–5:20 pm, Covell 218. CRN: 73496. FALL 2009 MATH COURSE FOR GRADS. MTH 654: “Numerical Analysis” develops theory and implementation details for solving large scale scientific computing problems. Rigorous mathematical background as well as algorithms will be developed for solving large linear and nonlinear systems of equations using a variety of Newton-Krylov methods, multigrid and domain decomposition.
