CORVALLIS COMMUNITY
VISION FOR EDUCATION ASSESSMENT. The
Corvallis School District is partnering with the OSU Office of Community and
Diversity to help make Corvallis a more welcoming and inclusive
community. In the fall of 2007, the Corvallis 509J School Board approved
recommendation topics that were developed based on the input of participants in
a community visioning process. This Corvallis Community Vision for
Education (CCVE) project developed the following diversity and
inclusion-related recommendations: Equity, Access, & School Choice; Global
Perspective; Safe Environment; Welcoming, Inclusive Schools; and World
Languages. The report is located at http://www.csd509j.net/district_information/school_board/CCVE_Final.pdf.
We are currently creating an assessment (e.g. survey, focus groups, district
data, etc.) to serve as a foundation for creating a district-wide diversity
action plan. We are looking for volunteers that are skilled at
qualitative and quantitative research, focus group facilitation, and content
analysis. If you are interested in volunteering to help out with this
assessment, please contact Corrine Gerig at Corrine.Gerig@oregonstate.edu

BE AN ASA TUTOR. Academics
for Student Athletes (ASA) provides a variety of support services for all
student athletes at OSU, including subject tutoring, to aid student athletes in
their academic endeavors. ASA is currently looking for graduate students or
upperclassmen to work as tutors with some of our student athletes who are
registered for Statistics classes, specifically a tutor for ST 314. ASA prefers
to hire students who have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 and who have taken
particular courses in which student athletes need assistance. A tutor must have
comprehensive, detailed knowledge of the subject matter, be able to communicate
concepts, ideas and theories clearly, exhibit patience and the sensitivity to
discover at exactly what point the student failed to grasp the material, and
discover a way to teach the material so it is clear to the student. Laura Smithers, the Learning Services Counselor, will interview
prospective tutors. Laura can be contacted at 541-737-7356 or at Laura.Smithers@oregonstate.edu.

LL Stewart Scholar Workshop: “Promoting Active Learning in the
Classroom with Concept-Based Instruction.” Presenter: Milo Koretsky,
CBEE. Wednesday, May 21, 9–10 am, Owen
241. In an interactive, hands-on manner, this workshop will introduce
instructors to a tool developed with funding from a LL Stewart Faculty Scholar
Grant, the Web-based Interactive Science and Engineering (WISE) Learning Tool.
WISE is designed to utilize the College of Engineering’s Wireless Laptop Initiative
so that every student in a class is simultaneously engaged, creating a learner
centered class based on active learning. WISE can be used to develop activities
that probe for conceptual understanding and deeper level thinking. It allows
real-time formative assessment by the instructor. After the students have
submitted a response to an activity, the instructor can review a summary of the
results with the class. Depending on the class response, the instructor can
choose an appropriate method (e.g. peer instruction, instructor explanation) to
reinforce or correct the response. In this workshop, participants will learn
how to use WISE in their classes including: creation of questions, delivery in
class, and strategies for concept-based instruction. [posted

THE JUST CLASSROOM: A
CONVERSATION. Tuesday, May 27, 4–5 pm, MU 206. What is a just classroom?
We teach about justice; we encourage our students to live justly; but what how
do we construct classrooms that are in themselves just? This conversation,
facilitated by DPD Director Susan Shaw, will help faculty examine how they can
model justice through their teaching. We will address such issues as power
arrangements in the classroom, faculty-student and student-student
relationships, student and faculty behavior, assignments and assessment, and
institutional issues (class size, facilities, etc). [posted
