9th ANNUAL ENGINEERING EXPO THIS FRIDAY…

DON’T MISS OUT!

On Friday, May 9th, Noon–5 pm, the Engineering Expo takes over at the Kelley Engineering Center on the Oregon State campus. This year’s event promises to be another spectacular showcase of innovative creations. The event is free and open to the public.

Inside and outside, the Kelley Center will be abuzz with student ingenuity featuring inventions developed by OSU engineering students for their senior design projects. And as always, this year’s Formula and Mini Baja race cars built by OSU students for international competitions will be on display, along with a human-powered kinetic sculpture racing vehicle, a SWAT reconnaissance vehicle, a GPS robot, an electric motorcycle, and other wheeled contraptions. Other Expo highlights include the Sustainability Showcase, featuring green engineering projects (including the Student Sustainability Center’s Solar Trailer, one of last year’s ME senior projects), and the Robo*Palooza, which includes a variety of robot activities with a TekBot® Triathlon, a “best dressed” contest, maze race, and freestyle events. A contingent of FIRST robots built by local high school students will also be moving about.

ASA is currently looking for graduate students or upperclassmen to work as tutors with some of our student athletes who are registered for Statistics classes, specifically a tutor for ST 314. ASA prefers to hire students who have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 and who have taken particular courses in which student athletes need assistance. A tutor must have comprehensive, detailed knowledge of the subject matter, be able to communicate concepts, ideas and theories clearly, exhibit patience and the sensitivity to discover at exactly what point the student failed to grasp the material, and discover a way to teach the material so it is clear to the student. Laura Smithers, the Learning Services Counselor, will interview prospective tutors. Laura can be contacted at 541-737-7356 or at Laura.Smithers@oregonstate.edu. DONATE YOUR USED ENGINEERING TEXTBOOKS TO IRAQI FACULTY AND STUDENTS. The Maysan University was once known for its high standards in business and engineering, but most of the texts at Maysan University were destroyed during Sadam Hussein's Regime and they have not been able to get the central government to allocate enough money for the purchase of new texts. The books that they do have are outdated and not adequate for a new generation of business leaders and engineers. But you can help! If you have a few *current* (ie, published in the 21st century) engineering text books on your shelf that might be put to good use in the hands of Iraqi faculty and students and would be little missed, please donate them to benefit Maysan University. The books can be used or new. You can either bring them to the CoE office in Covell or contact Jim Lundy at (541) 737-5235 or Jim.Lundy@oregonstate.edu to arrange a collection time. Your donations are much appreciated!
