CORVALLIS COMMUNITY
VISION FOR EDUCATION ASSESSMENT. The
Corvallis School District is partnering with the OSU Office of Community and
Diversity to help make Corvallis a more welcoming and inclusive
community. In the fall of 2007, the Corvallis 509J School Board approved
recommendation topics that were developed based on the input of participants in
a community visioning process. This Corvallis Community Vision for
Education (CCVE) project developed the following diversity and
inclusion-related recommendations: Equity, Access, & School Choice; Global
Perspective; Safe Environment; Welcoming, Inclusive Schools; and World
Languages. The report is located at http://www.csd509j.net/district_information/school_board/CCVE_Final.pdf.
We are currently creating an assessment (e.g. survey, focus groups, district
data, etc.) to serve as a foundation for creating a district-wide diversity
action plan. We are looking for volunteers that are skilled at
qualitative and quantitative research, focus group facilitation, and content
analysis. If you are interested in volunteering to help out with this
assessment, please contact Corrine Gerig at Corrine.Gerig@oregonstate.edu
or (541) 737-4381. [posted 5/5]
BE AN ASA TUTOR. Academics
for Student Athletes (ASA) provides a variety of support services for all student
athletes at OSU, including subject tutoring, to aid student athletes in their
academic endeavors. ASA is currently looking for graduate students or
upperclassmen to work as tutors with some of our student athletes who are
registered for Statistics classes, specifically a tutor for ST 314. ASA prefers
to hire students who have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 and who have taken
particular courses in which student athletes need assistance. A tutor must have
comprehensive, detailed knowledge of the subject matter, be able to communicate
concepts, ideas and theories clearly, exhibit patience and the sensitivity to
discover at exactly what point the student failed to grasp the material, and
discover a way to teach the material so it is clear to the student. Laura Smithers, the Learning Services Counselor, will interview
prospective tutors. Laura can be contacted at 541-737-7356 or at Laura.Smithers@oregonstate.edu.

DONATE YOUR USED ENGINEERING TEXTBOOKS TO IRAQI FACULTY AND STUDENTS. The
Maysan University was once known for its high
standards in business and engineering, but most of the texts at Maysan University were destroyed during Sadam Hussein's Regime and they have not been able to get
the central government to allocate enough money for the purchase of new texts.
The books that they do have are outdated and not adequate for a new generation
of business leaders and engineers. But you can help! If you have a few
*current* (ie, published in the 21st
century) engineering text books on your shelf that might be put to good use in
the hands of Iraqi faculty and students and would be little missed, please
donate them to benefit Maysan University. The books
can be used or new. You can either bring them to the CoE
office in Covell or contact Jim Lundy at (541)
737-5235 or Jim.Lundy@oregonstate.edu
to arrange a collection time. Your donations are much appreciated! [posted 4/28]

WE’VE GOT SIGNAGE! If you haven’t seen it yet, come on down to the
Rogers Hall front entry way (off Monroe Ave) and check out the striking new
school sign that announces to the world exactly who we are! And then pop into
Rogers 204 and pay your compliments to the sign designer, Jennifer Dollins, who
joined MIME earlier this year as our Public
Information / Multimedia & Print Communications Assistant. Along with
creating long-needed signage for the School of MIME (and much more of it will
be coming, not just in Rogers but also in Covell and
Dearborn), Jennifer has been hard at work updating the MIME Web site, assisting
with this e-bulletin and the MIME job board, and working on myriad other
informational, photographic, design, and PR efforts on the school’s behalf. So
hats off to you, Jennifer, and thanks! We’re fortunate indeed to have you on
board as part of the MIME team. [posted 4/28]

JOIN THE
NEW PROJECT COMMITTEE FOR EWB-OSU! EWB-OSU is considering taking on another
small international project. Due to our great publicity, outreach, and
successes with the ongoing El Salvador Project, we have many project
opportunities to choose from. Thus, the chapter is forming a New Project
Selection Committee to determine if any of these projects are appropriate for
our chapter to take on in the next year. The Committee will narrow down
the field of opportunities and present a few options to the Board and the whole
Chapter. This is a GREAT opportunity to learn about various countries
around the world, current development issues, and the EWB project process. It's
also a great chance to have a positive impact on communities here and abroad!
Sound like fun? Contact Evan Miles at evan.stewart.miles@gmail.com.
