DONATE YOUR USED ENGINEERING
TEXTBOOKS TO IRAQI FACULTY AND STUDENTS
Dear MIME students, staff, and
faculty: Captain Joshua Mater, a 2002 OSU graduate, is stationed in Iraq and
works to establish relations with provincial governments, local tribal leaders,
and sheikhs as well as with many international bodies from various Departments
of State to improve conditions for the Iraqi people. Josh has been doing
extensive work in the Maysan Province and one of the projects will refurbish
the Maysan University, once known for its high standards in business and
engineering. Most of the texts at Maysan University were destroyed
during Sadam Hussein's Regime and they have not been able to get the
central government to allocate enough money for the purchase of new texts. The
books that they do have are outdated and not adequate for a new generation of
business leaders and engineers.
But you can help! If you have a few *current* (ie, published in
the 21st century) engineering text books on your shelf that might be
put to good use in the hands of Iraqi faculty and students and would be little
missed, please donate them to benefit Maysan University. The books can be used
or new. You can either bring them to the CoE office in Covell or contact Jim
Lundy at (541) 737-5235 or Jim.Lundy@oregonstate.edu
to arrange a collection time. Your donations are much appreciated!
KUDOS
TO ME–MAT SCI WINNERS OF ASM-OREGON COMPETITION!
Congratulations
to ME-based Materials Science doctoral candidates Minalben Shah and Chien-Chih
Huang for their top placements in ASM–Oregon’s
first annual Student Presentation
Competition last week! Ms. Shah earned 1st place honors and a $500 cash prize
for her presentation on “Micromechanisms of
Fracture in Resin Based Dental Restorative Composites.” Mr. Huang, who spoke on
“Structure and Dielectric Properties in Bi(Zn1/2Ti1/2)O3-ABO3
Perovskite Solid Solutions,” placed 3rd in the competition and
garnered a $300 prize. Ms. Shah and Mr. Huang are members of Dr. Jay Kruzic’s
and Dr. David Cann’s Materials Science research groups, respectively.
AND
KUDOS TO THE BEAVER EVOLUTION TEAM, TOO!
And congratulations, too, to Team Beaver Evolution: ME sophomore Nikole Wilkins and ChE teammates Ian
Braly, Paul Dornath, and Matt
Yoder. The team’s H2-powered
fuel cell car took 1st place
in the 2008 American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) Pacific Northwest
Regional Chem-E-Car
competition (held at WSU), and the team
also earned 2nd place in
the poster competition. The team now has the honor of
representing the Pacific Northwest Region in the National Competition in
Philadelphia next November for AIChE's 100th Anniversary Celebration. Stop by
Gleeson Hall this week to see the Beaver Evolution car, poster, and awards, currently on
display in the Gleeson Hall lobby.
WE’VE GOT SIGNAGE!
If you haven’t seen it yet, come on down to the Rogers Hall front
entry way (off Monroe Ave) and check out the striking new school sign that announces
to the world exactly who we are! And then pop into Rogers 204 and pay your
compliments to the sign designer, Jennifer
Dollins, who joined MIME earlier this year as our Public Information / Multimedia & Print Communications Assistant. Along
with creating long-needed signage for the School of MIME (and much more of it will
be coming, not just in Rogers but also in Covell and Dearborn), Jennifer has
been hard at work updating the MIME Web site, assisting with this e-bulletin
and the MIME job board, and working on myriad other informational, photographic,
design, and PR efforts on the school’s behalf.
So hats off to you, Jennifer, and thanks! We’re fortunate indeed to have
you on board as part of the MIME team.

JOIN
THE NEW PROJECT COMMITTEE FOR EWB-OSU! EWB-OSU is considering taking
on another small international project. Due to our great publicity,
outreach, and successes with the ongoing El Salvador Project, we have many
project opportunities to choose from. Thus, the chapter is forming a New
Project Selection Committee to determine if any of these projects are
appropriate for our chapter to take on in the next year. The Committee
will narrow down the field of opportunities and present a few options to the
Board and the whole Chapter. This is a GREAT opportunity to learn about
various countries around the world, current development issues, and the EWB
project process. It's also a great chance to have a positive impact on
communities here and abroad! Sound like fun? Contact Evan Miles at evan.stewart.miles@gmail.com.
