ME SENIOR
DESIGN TEAM KUDOS. The Boys & Girls Club of Corvallis would like to
thank Dr. Ron Adams, Dr. John Parmigiani, and Oregon State
University students Andrew Sorg, Rhett Shidaker, and Gary Breck from the OSU School of
Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering. This senior design team
designed and implemented a solution to help reduce the acoustics problem in the
Boys & Girls Club art center by installing acoustical wall panels and ceiling
baffles. The Boys & Girls Club offers one of the most comprehensive art
programs in our community. There are several local, state and national art
contest winners from the club, and now we can more effectively teach art
projects because of the improved environment. Our staff is very grateful to
these individuals. —Helen Higgins, CEO, and
Nelia Mendonca, art center director, Boys & Girls Club of Corvallis. (Edited excerpt from
recent “Good Words” section of the Corvallis Gazette Times. To view the actual article, visit http://www.gazettetimes.com/articles/2008/04/05/news/people/2gwd01_april5.txt)

MIME FACULTY KUDOS. Congratulations
to Dr. Kagan Tumer, who has received a 3-year, single-PI grant from the
Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) to investigate the coordination
of multiple autonomous agents (such as robots or unmanned aerial vehicles)
operating in complex environments. Multi-agent coordination systems might be
used, for example, for robotic planetary exploration or, closer to home, for
traffic light coordination to alleviate congestion. Dr. Tumer's AFOSR project
will focus on how successful actions taken by individual agents within
multi-agent systems can lead to improved overall system performance and how to
"reward" individual agents' successful actions. In the human context,
an analogous reward scenario might be a company's bestowal of stock options on
individual workers whose productivity significantly forwards company goals. [posted

E-JOURNAL
DOWNLOADING POLICIES FROM OSU VALLEY LIBRARY: REMINDER AND CAUTION. OSU Libraries
subscribes to over 30,000 electronic journals and databases to support you at
Oregon State University. These include the IEEE Electronic Library, the ACM
Digital Library, and the journals of the ASCE and ASME. You are welcome to
use these resources for your classes and research. However, these
resources come with certain limitations. In general, users are authorized to
display, print, download or copy a reasonable portion of licensed electronic
resources. For journals, this is typically 1–2 articles. For books,
this is typically one chapter. If you need an entire journal issue (e.g., a
special "theme" issue), please contact the library and we will see if
we can arrange for special permission to use the entire issue. Publishers do not
allow systematic or substantial printing, copying, or downloading of electronic
resources (such as entire journal issues or books) via any method including
robots, scripts, agents, or other automatic downloading tools. Systematic
downloading of articles is in violation of the license agreements signed by
Oregon State University and may result in the loss of access to the journal for
all of OSU. Recently, we have had several instances where library users have
violated these terms by systematically downloading hundreds of articles. This
systematic downloading resulted in the loss of access to the journals for a
period ranging from one hour to one day. Repeat offenses could result in
the permanent loss of access to the journal for all of OSU due to these license
violations. DON’T DO IT!! If you have any questions, please feel free to
contact Laurel Kristick (Laurel.Kristick@oregonstate.edu,
737-7276) or Margaret Mellinger (Margaret.Mellinger@oregonstate.edu,
737-9642). [posted 4/7]
