Fluid Connector Products is pleased to present Technology Day at Oregon State University, on Thursday, April 10th, 9 am­–3 pm! We will have the Parker Tech Tour Trailer, loaded with the latest in fluid power, hose and fitting technology, in the Reser Stadium south parking lot. We’ll also be offering training seminars on loctite adhesives, hydraulic hose safety, thread identification, hydraulic symbols, and seal technology at the LaSells Stewart Center Agricultural Leaders Room. ATTENTION!!! REGISTER FOR ME 250 THIS SPRING TERM!

 

Are you planning to take ME 382: Intro to Design next fall? If so, you MUST register for ME 250: Intro to Manufacturing Processes (1 credit) this SPRING term and be certified to use the machine shop BEFORE you can work on your ME 382 project next fall.

 

There are still several openings in ME 250 for spring term. If you are a sophomore and have not taken ME 250 yet, you should be registered spring term. If you have any questions, contact Nicole Ray, Academic Advisor for Mechanical Engineering, at (541) 737-4718 or nicole.ray@oregonstate.edu.

NOMINATE AN MIME GRADUATE STUDENT! The OSU Graduate School seeks participants in the internal competition for selection of the institutional nominee for the 2008 Council of Graduate Schools/University Microfilms International Distinguished Dissertation Award in Mathematics, Physical Sciences, and Engineering. This prestigious national competition is an important opportunity for OSU to showcase graduate student scholarship and creativity to institutions throughout the country and to celebrate our success. The Graduate School will provide a cash award of $1,000 to the student selected as OSU's nominee and $1,000 for the graduate department/program submitting the selected nominee. The Graduate School also will provide travel support to a maximum of $700 for the student's major professor to attend the Dec 3–6 annual meeting of the Council of Graduate Schools in Washington, D.C. INTERESTED IN JOINING A THESIS-/DISSERTATION-WRITING SUPPORT GROUP? In an effort to increase the level of support, encouragement, and motivation for OSU students who are moving through the thesis-/dissertation-writing process, the Office of Community and Diversity is forming cross-disciplinary graduate writing support groups. These groups will meet regularly throughout the year. Resources available to these groups may include dissertation and thesis-related instruction, technical assistance, and mentorship, as needed. G UNIVERSITY CLUB FOUNDATION, INC. - GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP AWARD PROGRAM. The Graduate School is pleased to announce the University Club Foundation Graduate Fellowship Program will be offered again this year to recognize and encourage scholarship, demonstrated leadership, and potential societal contributions by among students pursuing graduate education in Oregon. One annual graduate fellowship valued at $5,000 will be awarded to successful nominees from each of the 5 selected Oregon universities - Oregon Health and Sciences University, Oregon State University, Portland State University, University of Oregon, and University of Portland. In addition to a $5,000 award, recipients will receive a complimentary three-year membership in the University Club and complimentary admission to three Club events each year. §  Experimental Methods in Mechanical Engineering .  The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas, TX, is hosting an NSF-sponsored summer REU in mechanical engineering or related engineering/science fields. Opportunities exist for research in state-of-the-art research facilities, including the Laser Micromachining Laboratory, the Experimental Fluid Mechanics Laboratory, the Research Center for Advanced Manufacturing, the Laboratory for Micro- and Nano-Mechanics of Materials, and the Micro Sensor Laboratory. §  Micro/Nano Assembly Workcell via Micro Visual Sensing and Haptic Feedback. Under the REU NSF grant, Texas State University-San Marcos and Texas A&M-University Corpus Christi are presenting a unique summer REU. The base site will be at Texas State University-San Marcos, Texas. Benefits: $6740 stipend + $1500 (for housing and meal). Program is for 10 weeks from June to August. §  Safe Passages Through Rural Transportation Corridors. Montana State University in Bozeman is inviting applications from undergraduate students in all fields of engineering as well as biology, environmental and earth sciences, and related fields to participate in a unique interdisciplinary summer research program. The Safe Passages REU site will research the complex issue of simultaneously providing for safe passage of humans, wildlife, and aquatic organisms through rural transportation corridors. The REU program will center around three interdisciplinary topic areas: 1) Water and Fish Passage; 2) Habitat Connectivity and Wildlife Movement; 3) Public Safety and Mobility. A 90-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 191 near MSU, which follows pristine mountain waterways and traverses part of Yellowstone National Park, will provide an ideal field site for students to pursue nationally replicable solutions to these issues. In addition to their project involvement, the students’ REU experience will be enriched by research seminars, training workshops, and similar educational activities over the course of the 10-week summer program. Program Dates: June 2–August 8. Stipend: $4,500 (plus an additional weekly food stipend). Travel: Travel reimbursement up to $900 for travel costs to MSU. §  Specialized and Interdisciplinary Research Projects. The Chemistry Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (Chem-SURF) at the University of California–Irvine provides a unique 10-week summer research opportunity for undergraduates to become fully immersed in a wide range of exciting, cutting-edge specialized and interdisciplinary research projects. With a goal of helping students gain the skills and confidence to become independent researchers and make better career decisions, the experience focuses on intensive and direct contact with a large number of faculty and their graduate students through a series of pre-research lectures, hands-on projects, weekly seminars and workshops, industry field trips, and social activities. Participants will have the opportunity to choose from a variety of challenging and original research projects that explore a diverse and exciting range of topics in chemical biology, chemical physics, and analytical, atmospheric, bioinorganic, bioorganic, theoretical, inorganic, organic, physical, and polymer chemistry. The Chem-SURF Program is committed to promoting diversity within the fields of science and engineering. Women, underrepresented minorities, and individuals from economically and socially disadvantaged backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply. Program Dates: June 22–August 30.
