TOWN HALL MEETING AT OSU
What's does a sustainable
Corvallis and Benton County mean to you? Share your vision and help shape the
future. The Corvallis Sustainability Coalition is launching a series of town
hall meetings that will lead to the creation of a community sustainability
action plan. OSU is hosting the first town hall on March 31 at the CH2M Hill Alumni Center. Join Mayor Charlie
Tomlinson and other community leaders in kicking off a series of democratic and
highly participatory events, involving as many people from the community as

Congratulations to Brett L. McFarlane, director of
undergraduate programs in the OSU College of Engineering, who has been elected
region chair for Northwest Region 8 of the National Academic Advising
Association. McFarlane will assume this role at the end of the NACADA annual
conference this October in Chicago and serve through 2010.

focused on the non-living factors in the forest, meadow, and pond communities.

SUPPORT GROUP? In an effort to increase the level of support,
encouragement, and motivation for OSU students who are moving through the
thesis-/dissertation-writing process, the Office of Community and Diversity is
forming cross-disciplinary graduate writing support groups. These groups
will meet regularly throughout the year. Resources available to these groups
may include dissertation and thesis-related instruction, technical assistance,
and mentorship, as needed. These support groups are free and open to all current
OSU graduate students. Former OSU students who have not completed their
dissertation or thesis are also invited to participate. If you are

UG 2008 NATIONAL CAPITAL AREA LEADERSHIP AWARD. The OSU Alumni Association (OSUAA) and
the OSUAA National Capital Area alumni created the National Capital Leadership
Award as a mechanism to assist OSU students who are eager to experience life in
our nation’s capital. The ideal student applicant will intern in a
congressional or judicial office, government agency, non-profit organization or
association, or private organization in the Washington, D.C., area. Deadline is

UG BENJAMIN A. GILMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM. The
Gilman International Scholarship Program provides awards of up to $5,000 for
U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad for up to one academic
year. The program aims to diversify the kinds of student who study abroad
and the countries and regions where they go. The program serves students
who have been under-represented in study abroad which includes but is not
limited to: students with high financial need, community college students,
students in under-represented fields such as the sciences and engineering,
students from diverse ethnic backgrounds, students attending minority-serving
institutions, and students with disabilities. The Gilman Program seeks to
assist students from a diverse range and type of two-year and four-year public
and private institutions from all 50 states, and is pleased to announce an
increase in the amount of awards to be given this academic
year. Additionally, an increased number of $3000 Critical Need Language
Supplements are available for students studying a critical need language for a
total possible award of $8000. A list of eligible languages can be found
on the Gilman website. There has
never been a better time to apply for a Gilman Scholarship! Eligibility:
Students must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application and
cannot be studying abroad in a country currently under a U.S. Department of

summer REU in mechanical engineering or related engineering/science

facilities, including the Laser Micromachining Laboratory, the Experimental
Fluid Mechanics Laboratory, the Research Center for

Manufacturing
Measurements, Quality, and Equipment. This summer, the Industrial
Engineering Department at the University
of Oklahoma, will be hosting an REU.
The REU site is funded by the National Science Foundation and Department
of Defense and will provide students with the opportunity to work closely with
faculty members through collaborative research projects in the areas of
manufacturing measurements, quality, and equipment. The FACTS: Program dates
are June 5–August 8; $3,000 stipend, housing, with $400 for meals and roundtrip
travel expenses provided; research in areas of metrology and quality
engineering; Applications are open to science, mathematics, and engineering
majors who meet all requirements. REQUIREMENTS: According to NSF requirements,
undergraduate student participants supported with NSF funds must be US citizens
or permanent residents of the United States or its possessions. An undergraduate student must be enrolled in
a degree program (part-time or full-time) leading to a bachelor's degree. High school graduates who have not yet
enrolled in a college degree program and students who have completed their bachelor's
degrees and are no longer enrolled as undergraduates are not eligible. Application deadline: Friday, April 25.

§ Micro/Nano Assembly Workcell via Micro
Visual Sensing and Haptic Feedback. Under the REU NSF grant, Texas State University-San Marcos and Texas A&M-University
Corpus Christi are presenting a unique summer REU. The base site will
be at Texas State University-San Marcos, Texas. Benefits: $6740 stipend + $1500

§ NEW! Safe
Passages Through Rural Transportation Corridors.
Montana State University in Bozeman is inviting applications from
undergraduate students in all fields of engineering as well as biology, environmental
and earth sciences, and related fields to participate in a unique
interdisciplinary summer research program. The Safe Passages REU site will
research the complex issue of simultaneously providing for safe passage of
humans, wildlife, and aquatic organisms through rural transportation
corridors. The REU program will center around three interdisciplinary
topic areas: 1) Water and Fish Passage; 2) Habitat Connectivity and Wildlife
Movement; 3) Public Safety and Mobility. A 90-mile stretch of U.S. Highway
191 near MSU, which follows pristine mountain waterways and traverses part of
Yellowstone National Park, will provide an ideal field site for students to
pursue nationally replicable solutions to these issues. In addition to their
project involvement, the students’ REU experience will be enriched by research
seminars, training workshops, and similar educational activities over the
course of the 10-week summer program. Program Dates: June 2–August 8.
Stipend: $4,500 (plus an additional weekly food stipend).
Travel: Travel reimbursement up to $900 for travel costs to MSU. Housing:

Research Projects.
The Chemistry Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (Chem-SURF) at the University
of California–Irvine provides a unique 10-week summer research opportunity
for undergraduates to become fully immersed in a wide range of exciting,
cutting-edge specialized and interdisciplinary research projects. With a
goal of helping students gain the skills and confidence to become independent
researchers and make better career decisions, the experience focuses on
intensive and direct contact with a large number of faculty and their graduate
students through a series of pre-research lectures, hands-on projects, weekly
seminars and workshops, industry field trips, and social activities.
Participants will have the opportunity to choose from a variety of challenging
and original research projects that explore a diverse and exciting range of
topics in chemical biology, chemical physics, and analytical, atmospheric,
bioinorganic, bioorganic, theoretical, inorganic, organic, physical, and
polymer chemistry. The Chem-SURF Program is
committed to promoting diversity within the fields of science and engineering.
Women, underrepresented minorities, and individuals from economically and
