MIME FACULTY KUDOS
Congratulations to Dr.
Vinod Narayanan on his recent NSF CAREER Award. The broad goal of his
funded project, Enhanced Two-phase Thermal Management Using
Self-sustained Flow Oscillations at the Microscale,
is to establish an integrated research and educational
framework in the field of thermal management. Narayanan is one of two CoE faculty who are 2008
recipients of this prestigious award and are being featured in an upcoming Momentum!
article. Stay tuned!.

Graduate Horizons is a four-day
‘crash-course’ for Native American, Alaskan, and Hawaiian college students (or
graduates) in preparing for graduate school. At this info session, Whitney

application process for the next Graduate Horizons conference (Tucson, AZ, July
12–15).

of Industrial Engineering Officer Elections Meeting. 6 pm, Covell 216. Free

for the next round of IIE–OSU officers (spring 08–winter 09). All IME students
invited to participate! If you've never heard of IIE or if just haven’t had had
the time or inclination to come to any previous events, here’s your chance to
get involved! Advantages of IIE membership include scholarship considerations,
travel opportunities, and networking. This May, the OSU chapter of IIE will be

TWO OSU AWARDS—CALLS FOR NOMINATIONS FROM

Award for Outstanding Service to Persons with Disabilities. For the past 10 years, the University Advisory Committee, the
Commission on Status of Individuals with Disabilities (COSID), has been
annually honoring individuals who foster and promote persons with disabilities
to enjoy full participation in all aspects of the campus community. Nomination deadline for this year’s award

§ Mason Prize for Integrity and Moral Courage.
The Mason Prize is a new award created by OSU that will be given annually to
students, faculty, or staff. In a society that is increasingly focused on
competition and economics, a reward for those who have the courage to make
tough decisions and take high moral ground is more important than ever,
according to OSU emeritus professor Robert G. Mason, who is funding the award
with his family. The deadline to submit
nominations is Friday, March 14.

RISK REDUCTION TRAINING FOR OSU FACULTY AND STAFF. Please consider attending a 90-minute training for OSU
faculty/staff on suicide risk reduction. Training session are
being offered on April 7 and 15 and are facilitated by OSU Counseling &

UG 2008 NATIONAL CAPITAL AREA LEADERSHIP AWARD. The OSU Alumni Association (OSUAA) and
the OSUAA National Capital Area alumni created the National Capital Leadership
Award as a mechanism to assist OSU students who are eager to experience life in
our nation’s capital. The ideal student applicant will intern in a
congressional or judicial office, government agency, non-profit organization or
association, or private organization in the Washington, D.C., area. Applicants

UG BENJAMIN A. GILMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM. The
Gilman International Scholarship Program provides awards of up to $5,000 for
U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad for up to one academic
year. The program aims to diversify the kinds of student who study abroad
and the countries and regions where they go. The program serves students
who have been under-represented in study abroad which includes but is not
limited to: students with high financial need, community college students,
students in under-represented fields such as the sciences and engineering,
students from diverse ethnic backgrounds, students attending minority-serving
institutions, and students with disabilities. The Gilman Program seeks to
assist students from a diverse range and type of two-year and four-year public
and private institutions from all 50 states, and is pleased to announce an
increase in the amount of awards to be given this academic
year. Additionally, an increased number of $3000 Critical Need Language
Supplements are available for students studying a critical need language for a
total possible award of $8000. A list of eligible languages can be found
on the Gilman website. There has
never been a better time to apply for a Gilman Scholarship! Eligibility:
Students must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application and
cannot be studying abroad in a country currently under a U.S. Department of

are being offered. A grant of up $800 each quarter will be made available to

at either Linn Benton Community College or Oregon State University. For degree
partnership students, the total payment can be divided between the two

UG INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING
REU AT UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA. This summer, the Industrial Engineering
Department at the University of Oklahoma, will be hosting a Research
Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) summer program. The REU site is funded by the National
Science Foundation and Department of Defense and will provide students with the
opportunity to work closely with faculty members through collaborative research
projects in the areas of manufacturing measurements, quality, and equipment.
The FACTS: Program dates are June 5–August 8; $3,000 stipend, housing, with
$400 for meals and roundtrip travel expenses provided; research in areas of
metrology and quality engineering; Applications are open to science,
mathematics, and engineering majors who meet all requirements. REQUIREMENTS:
According to NSF requirements, undergraduate student participants supported
with NSF funds must be US citizens or permanent residents of the United States
or its possessions. An undergraduate
student must be enrolled in a degree program (part-time or full-time) leading
to a bachelor's degree. High school
graduates who have not yet enrolled in a college degree program and students
who have completed their bachelor's degrees and are no longer enrolled as
undergraduates are not eligible.

facilities as well as multiple functions in preparation for a manager level

visits to company headquarters in Pittsburgh during the two year rotation. The
chosen candidate would spend six to eight months in each of the following
