MARCH 11th: WINTER BANQUET FOR MIME PRO SCHOOL STUDENTS!

 

If you are an MIME pro-school student, please join us at next week’s MIME Winter Banquet. This is a new event for our school and serves as a celebratory send-off to those of you who are graduating or leaving for MECOP at the end of winter term. The banquet takes place on Tuesday, March 11, 6:00–8:00 pm, in the MU ballroom.  Take a break during dead week and enjoy a FREE catered dinner, socialize with friends, bid adieu to folks who are heading off campus, and congratulate this year’s winners of the IME and ME Outstanding Senior and Professor awards.

SUCH A DEAL!  If you are a 2008 graduate (i.e., you completed your program in fall 2007, or will be completing it winter, spring, or summer 2008), your name, address, and phone number (as listed in your “Current Contact Information” on the Web) have been sent to The Ball Studio, and they will be contacting you to schedule a sitting for your senior composite picture. The cost to you is a one-time-only sitting fee of $10.00. In honor of the 35th Anniversary of the Women's Center, Women Studies Program and the President's Commission on the Status of Women, the Women's Center at Oregon State University will present the 2008 Women of Achievement Awards. These awards honor the contributions and commitment of outstanding women on our campus and throughout the state of Oregon whose work has benefited women. APPLY FOR A PROMISE INTERN. Participate as a PROMISE internship sponsor/mentor for this summer’s program. PROMISE is an internship program that supports the goal of enhancing work force diversity. It provides 10-week, full-time, managerial or technical level paid work experiences to OSU students. The program runs from Mon, June 23, through Fri, Aug 29. The objective is to introduce future OSU graduates to prospective careers with OSU and state government agencies. This internship program is coordinated by a task force of OSU faculty and staff. This coordinating group plans a weekly luncheon networking session for supervisors and interns, workshops, training opportunities, speakers, and a one-day field experience with major agency heads in Salem. NOMINATE AN MIME GRADUATE STUDENT! The OSU Graduate School seeks participants in the internal competition for selection of the institutional nominee for the 2008 Council of Graduate Schools/University Microfilms International Distinguished Dissertation Award in Mathematics, Physical Sciences, and Engineering. This prestigious national competition is an important opportunity for OSU to showcase graduate student scholarship and creativity to institutions throughout the country and to celebrate our success. The Graduate School will provide a cash award of $1,000 to the student selected as OSU's nominee and $1,000 for the graduate department/program submitting the selected nominee. UG 2008 NATIONAL CAPITAL AREA LEADERSHIP AWARD. The OSU Alumni Association (OSUAA) and the OSUAA National Capital Area alumni created the National Capital Leadership Award as a mechanism to assist OSU students who are eager to experience life in our nation’s capital. The ideal student applicant will intern in a congressional or judicial office, government agency, non-profit organization or association, or private organization in the Washington, D.C., area. UG BENJAMIN A. GILMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM. The Gilman International Scholarship Program provides awards of up to $5,000 for U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad for up to one academic year. The program aims to diversify the kinds of student who study abroad and the countries and regions where they go. The program serves students who have been under-represented in study abroad which includes but is not limited to: students with high financial need, community college students, students in under-represented fields such as the sciences and engineering, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds, students attending minority-serving institutions, and students with disabilities. The Gilman Program seeks to assist students from a diverse range and type of two-year and four-year public and private institutions from all 50 states, and is pleased to announce an increase in the amount of awards to be given this academic year. Additionally, an increased number of $3000 Critical Need Language Supplements are available for students studying a critical need language for a total possible award of $8000. A list of eligible languages can be found on the Gilman website. There has never been a better time to apply for a Gilman Scholarship! UG  INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING REU AT UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA. This summer, the Industrial Engineering Department at the University of Oklahoma, will be hosting a Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) summer program.  The REU site is funded by the National Science Foundation and Department of Defense and will provide students with the opportunity to work closely with faculty members through collaborative research projects in the areas of manufacturing measurements, quality, and equipment. The FACTS: Program dates are June 5–August 8; $3,000 stipend, housing, with $400 for meals and roundtrip travel expenses provided; research in areas of metrology and quality engineering; Applications are open to science, mathematics, and engineering majors who meet all requirements. REQUIREMENTS: According to NSF requirements, undergraduate student participants supported with NSF funds must be US citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its possessions.  An undergraduate student must be enrolled in a degree program (part-time or full-time) leading to a bachelor's degree.  High school graduates who have not yet enrolled in a college degree program and students who have completed their bachelor's degrees and are no longer enrolled as undergraduates are not eligible. UG  REU IN NANOMATERIALS AND NANOMECHANICS. The goal of this NSF-supported summer undergraduate research experience is to provide a unique opportunity for undergraduates to participate in a research and professional development program.  Some projects include: (1) carbon nanotubes, (2) atomistic simulations, (3) tribological properties, and (4) growth mechanisms.  Location: The University of Arkansas at Fayetteville Dates: May 18 to July 25, 2008. A full-time, tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor position is available in the Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering (IME) Department at North Dakota State University. Performance expectations include excellence in undergraduate and graduate instruction, the development and support of a viable research program, and a balance of university and professional service. An earned doctorate in industrial engineering or closely related field.
