FEB 19th INDUSTRY RECEPTION: FINAL CALL FOR REGISTRATION!

 

Thanks to all students who have registered for this year’s EECS–MIME Industry Reception, happening tomorrow, Feb 19th, 5:45–7:45 pm. There are still a few spaces available, so if you haven’t yet registered, please consider doing so. The Industry Reception is a free event designed to help you meet companies and network.  Some organizations are hiring for internships and full-time positions, others just want you to get better acquainted with their company.  Even if you’re not looking for work right now, it’s very important to get out there and start forming relationships with the people who might one day help find you an internship or job.

FEB 25th NATIONAL ENGINEERS WEEK BANQUET: YOU’RE INVITED!

 

In celebration of National Engineers Week 2008, all faculty, staff, and students from the College of Engineering are invited to attend a banquet sponsored by The Willamette Valley Section of the Society of Women Engineers.  Dr. Jane Lubchenco, the Wayne and Gladys Valley Professor of Marine Biology and Distinguished Professor of Zoology at Oregon State University, will be our keynote speaker.  The banquet will be held Monday, Feb 25, at 6:00 pm at the CH2M Hill Alumni Center. We hope that you can join us to celebrate the many contributions made by engineers to our society. BA 407: ADVERTISING UNDER THE MICROSCOPE: ETHICS AND THE INDUSTRY (CRN 37045) is a 1-credit, spring-term seminar series to present and analyze the ethical restraints, requirements, and social obligations of the American advertising industry. Wed Feb 20: EWB Wind Turbine Meeting. 6 pm, Student Sustainability Center (15th & Western). This project is meant to supply night-time security lighting via wind energy collection and storage.  At this meeting, we will go over some of the potential to-do items, including some research results on what sort of turbines we would be able to put on the building, what type of lighting could be used, and what potential of storage we could use. Anyone interested in the project is encouraged to attend this meeting. CAMPUS WELLNESS WEEK. Feb 18–Feb 23. This event encourages students, faculty and staff to "Do Something...For the Health of it." Goals are to increase awareness of health and wellness resources on campus and to encourage participation in activities highlighting seven components of wellness: physical, occupational, intellectual, social, values/spiritual, environmental, and emotional wellness. Win a Nintendo Wii or other prizes. Pick up your wellness passport at Dixon Recreation Center and participate in at least four activities to be eligible. WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE. March 1, 9 am–3 pm, MU. This conference will feature a keynote speaker, luncheon, and concurrent break-out sessions led by women in the fields of science, politics, athletics, entertainment, business, and higher education. The break-out sessions will include speeches, discussions and activities that center on the theme Changes, Challenges, and Choices faced by the women in our society. It is an honor to host Christine Hassler, an experienced author and life coach as this year's keynote speaker. Ms. Hassler specializes in speaking to 20-something women about the myth of having it all. This program hits on many of the most critical issues facing today's young women: self-image, finances, dating and relationships, careers and spirituality. Ms. Hassler helps young women understand the importance of living with integrity. In addition to her keynote address, Ms. Hassler will be offering individualized speed coaching during one of the break-out sessions. If you choose to participate in this break-out, there are two options for individualized coaching: a 15 minute session and a copy of her book at a cost of $20 ($40 value), or a 15 minute coaching session at a cost of $10. NOMINATIONS FOR 2008 WOMEN OF ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS. In honor of the 35th Anniversary of the Women's Center, Women Studies Program and the President's Commission on the Status of Women, the Women's Center at Oregon State University will present the 2008 Women of Achievement Awards. These awards honor the contributions and commitment of outstanding women on our campus and throughout the state of Oregon whose work has benefited women. 2008 CONFERENCE OF RESNA, STUDENT DESIGN COMPETITION. RESNA is the premier professional organization in the field of assistive and rehabilitation technology and its annual conference offers an excellent public forum for presenting research, design work, and clinical findings to service providers, researchers, educators, and consumers from the U.S. and the international community. The Student Design Competition (SDC) is open to students from any discipline who have a creative and innovative design that will assist an individual with a disability to function more independently or accomplish a desired task. FEBRUARY FOOD DRIVE: PLEASE HELP! The month of February is OSU’s annual Food Drive in Cooperation with Linn-Benton Food Share. Your donations of food and/or funds to this worthy cause will help people in your community to feed their families and themselves! NOMINATE A PROFESSOR. Nominations are being sought for the 2008 Distinguished Professor honor. The recognition is given to active OSU faculty members who have achieved national and/or international stature as a result of their contributions to scholarship/creative activity, research, education, and service, and whose work has been notably influential in their fields of specialization. NOMINATE AN OSU STUDENT. The OSU Graduate School seeks participants in the internal competition for selection of the institutional nominee for the 2008 Council of Graduate Schools/University Microfilms International Distinguished Dissertation Award in Mathematics, Physical Sciences and Engineering. This prestigious national competition is an important opportunity for OSU to showcase graduate student scholarship and creativity to institutions throughout the country and to celebrate our success. The Graduate School will provide a cash award of $1,000 to the student selected as OSU's nominee and $1,000 for the graduate department/program submitting the selected nominee. The Graduate School also will provide travel support to a maximum of $700 for the student's major professor to attend the Dec 3–6 annual meeting of the Council of Graduate Schools in Washington, D.C. WRITING INTENSIVE CURRICULUM (WIC) Department Development Grants 2008 RFP. Grant ideas might include support for: A departmental retreat or workshop on writing in the department’s curriculum, partial faculty buy-out for development of a new WIC course, assessment of your department’s WIC writing assignments, development of a departmental writing guide (see examples at http://wic.oregonstate.edu/wic_dept_writ_guides.html), or assessment or updating of your existing departmental writing guide. INTERNATIONAL CAREER FAIR (ICF) 2008. On Friday, Feb 29 and Saturday, March 1, international companies and research organizations are coming to San Francisco with job openings in Europe, America and Asia. Microsoft, GE Energy, Renault-Nissan, LinkedIn, Egis Rail, Thales, CNRS, Cosmetic Valley, Dell, Danone, and Total are just a sample of the participating companies. NOW is the time to register online, upload résumés and make travel arrangements. Companies are reviewing résumés starting February 1 and setting up one-on-one interviews prior to the event. 2008 NATIONAL CAPITAL AREA LEADERSHIP AWARD. The OSU Alumni Association (OSUAA) and the OSUAA National Capital Area alumni created the National Capital Leadership Award as a mechanism to assist OSU students who are eager to experience life in our nation’s capital. The ideal student applicant will intern in a congressional or judicial office, government agency, non-profit organization or association, or private organization in the Washington, D.C., area. MATERIAL HANDLING EDUCATION FOUNDATION (MHEFI) SCHOLARSHIP. The Objective of the MHEFI Scholarship Program is to promote the study of material handling and to expose as many students as possible to the material handling industry, including the vast array of equipment, systems and technologies represented by the industry; the role of material handling in a productive enterprise; and the many career paths available within the supplier, distributor and end-user (applications) sides of the industry. The goal of the scholarship program is to encourage choices upon graduation that will ultimately lead to careers within the industry and careers in teaching and research that will prepare the next generation of industry leaders. MORRIS K. UDALL UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS. In 2008, the Morris K. Udall Foundation expects to award 80 scholarships and 50 honorable mentions on the basis of merit to sophomore and junior level college students. Scholarships are offered in any of three categories:

§  To students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to the environment; or

§  To Native American and Alaska Native students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to tribal public policy; or

§  To Native American and Alaska Native students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to Native health care.

The Udall Foundation seeks future leaders across a wide spectrum of environmental fields, including policy, engineering, science, education, urban planning and renewal, business, health, justice, and economics. The Foundation also seeks future Native American and Alaska Native leaders in public and community health care, tribal government, and public policy affecting Native American communities, including land and resource management, economic development, and education. NEW! INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING REU AT UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA. This summer, the Industrial Engineering Department at the University of Oklahoma, will be hosting a Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) summer program.  The REU site is funded by the National Science Foundation and Department of Defense and will provide students with the opportunity to work closely with faculty members through collaborative research projects in the areas of manufacturing measurements, quality, and equipment. The FACTS: Program dates are June 5–August 8; $3,000 stipend, housing, with $400 for meals and roundtrip travel expenses provided; research in areas of metrology and quality engineering; Applications are open to science, mathematics, and engineering majors who meet all requirements.
