The 4th Annual
Engineering Ball will be held this Saturday, February 21st, 7–10
pm, in the Kelley Engineering Center Atrium. This year’s theme is 1940’s SWING and music will be provided by the famous Zaworski Brothers
and their band! During the first hour there will be dance lessons too! This
semi-formal event, hosted by Society of Women Engineers (SWE), is for all COE
students, faculty, staff, friends, and family.
Tickets may be purchased at MU 103. Cost: $10 each, or $15
for a pair ($3 more if purchased at the door). Questions?

Forum: “The Economic Crisis and Its Impacts on Higher Education.” 5–7

Pettit, NASA Astronaut, OSU alumnus, and Oregonian. Dr. Pettit recently
returned from another space mission, logging about 6 million miles while
helping to renovate and expand the space station. All CoE faculty and staff are

MIME COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY UPDATE.
The School of MIME will hold the
2009 MIME Commencement Ceremony on Friday, June 12, 2009 (the day before the
University-wide graduation), at 10:00 am in LaSells
Stewart Center’s Austin Auditorium. If you plan to attend, RSVP to Gina Newcomb
(Gina.Newcomb@oregonstate.edu).
Plan to wear your cap and gown, and arrive at the auditorium between 9:15 and
10 am. Note: Whether or not you plan to attend the MIME commencement
ceremony, please fill out the 2009 Graduating Class Questionnaire (here)
so your achievements can be acknowledged in the program. Graduating students

RAIN OR SHINE: AIAA ROCKET
COMPETITION HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED FOR THIS FRIDAY (2/20). The AIAA small rocket competition has been
rescheduled due to inclement weather. So, this Friday, February 20th,
3–6 pm, the competition will take place in Corvallis, in the park
area on the north side of Jefferson Ave. between NW 11th and 14th
streets. All OSU students interested in competing, observing, or launching
their own rockets are welcome to attend. AIAA will sell rocket kits for $10 at
either of their two weekly meetings (see
event listings). Note: Only rockets made from the AIAA-sold rocket kits

HOW DOES YOUR LIFE EXPERIENCE SHAPE YOUR CAREER DECISIONS? This 3-week
series of group workshops is directed toward OSU students, and co-facilitated
by Drs. Anne Lapour and Beth Wasylow
from CAPS. The group will address career and personality assessments,
exploration of your “career” roots and values, the importance of balance, and
the importance of diversity in knowing yourself and your career. Workshops are scheduled for Tuesdays, Feb
24, March 3, & March 10, 2–3:30 pm, Career Services (B008 Kerr Admin). Students
will take the MBTI and Strong Interest Inventory as a part of the group ($14

INTERESTED IN TOURING MEDALLION
CABINETRY WITH OSU SME? OSU Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) is
hosting a tour of Medallion Cabinetry, a manufacturer of semi-custom kitchen
cabinets in Independence, Oregon, on Thursday,
February 19 at 9:30 am. (Tour group will meet in the Batcheller
parking lot at 8:45 am and carpool to the facility). The tour group will be
limited to 20 members on a first-come-first-served basis. If you are

SUPPORT THE OSU FOOD DRIVE. The annual OSU Food Drive, which
benefits non-profit agencies served by the Linn-Benton Food Share, continues
through the month of February. Last
year OSU raised more than 400,000 pounds of food! There are several food
collection locations on campus including the two MIME offices (Rogers 204 and Dearborn 102). For a 2009 OSU Food Drive calendar of events and

Looking for someone to talk to about improving your grades, managing your
time, and preparing for tests? The CoE is offering a new peer coaching program,
in partnership with the OSU Academic Success Center (ASC), for undergraduates
who are seeking to clarify their educational and life goals and improve their
academic performance. One of seven peer coaches will work with you to help

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING RESEARCH EXPERIENCE FOR UNDERGRADUATES (REU). The Virtual Organization for the
Innovation in Conceptual Engineering Design (VOICED) project team, funded by
NSF, has an open position for an undergraduate research assistant who would
report to Dr. Irem Tumer and graduate student Michael Koch. The position’s purpose
is to study the usability of online engineering design tools and social
networking applications to understand how engineers can use them to enhance the
design process and collaborate on engineering projects. The assistant will gain
research experience by working closely with a team of professors and graduate
students (from 5 universities) who have extensive careers in engineering
design. Applicants should be
proficient or have the ability to quickly learn basic engineering software,
specifically software that deals with the design process, as well as be
familiar with online applications similar to Facebook
or LinkedIn. Additionally, the employee should be familiar with the engineering
design process, and the basic procedure that is followed when creating new and
innovative designs. Skills in basic web development is a plus, but not required

The CCFP is meant to attract recent graduates of master's degree programs in

business and related fields. This two-year fellowship appointment consists of

the City Administrator, Department of Human Resources, Department of Human
Services, Department of Transportation, Department of Corrections, the

(CCIP). CCIP is a six-week
program that offers summer positions (30–40 hrs/week). This mayoral initiative
was designed to bring the best and brightest to the District’s workforce by

program promotes leadership in candidates who want hands-on public policy
municipal government experience. Summer interns will also participate in
professional development and roundtable seminars with senior government

STATE UNIVERSITY. The position for Associate Dean for Strategic Research at OSU’s College
of Engineering has been reopened with a new closing date of February 16, 2009. An appointment
between .50 and 1.0 FTE will be considered. Applications previously submitted
for this position will continue to be considered. The COE seeks to increase the
impact of its research efforts by establishing large scale research programs
including national centers where engineering faculty serve in lead PI or Co‐Pi positions. The initial focus will be to
capitalize on OSU COE strengths in energy and clean technology research and

the development of innovative engineering leaders, on recruitment of top
faculty, and on generating new spin outs with economic impact. The successful
