EARTH UNDER FIRE: HOW GLOBAL WARMING IS CHANGING THE WORLD
World class photographer Gary Braasch
will present images from his new book, Earth Under Fire: How Global Warming
is Changing the World, on Tuesday,
February 5th at 7 pm in Withycombe Hall 109.
In the year 2000, Braasch embarked on a rare
journey to follow climate scientists and the effects of global warming to the
ends of the earth. Tuesday evening's presentation will include dramatic images
of changing glaciers, landscapes, animals, and the human dimension of a
changing climate, along with inspiring news about how people all over the world
are responding. Braasch's presentation
is the lead off event for the Campus Carbon Challenge, a month-long project to
reduce carbon dioxide emissions and encourage collective action to help
stabilize climate change. The event is sponsored by the Spring Creek Project
and OSU's Student Sustainability Initiative.

Mathematical Contest in Modeling (http://www.comap.com/undergraduate/contests/mcm/)
will be held Feb 14–18. This is an international, team based, undergraduate,
mathematical modeling competition. Each team has three students, from any
major. Two open-ended, real-world problems will be offered. Teams
will choose one problem and write up a thorough solution approach within 4
days. Teams may use any inanimate source of data or materials. Submissions
will be judged on the basis of scientific merits as well as clarity and
organization of the written report. Last year’s problems were “Gerrymandering”
and “The Airplane Seating Problem,” and our OSU team, consisting of William
G.K. Martin (MTH), Walter B. Woods (CS), and James S. Yih (ME) was
awarded Meritorious. This placed them in the top 14% internationally. If you
are interested in participating in this year’s competition, contact Nathan

SOPHOMORE REQUIREMENT FOR WINTER ADVISING
APPOINTMENT! All ME and IME sophomores (those who will be applying to
Pro-School this coming spring or fall term) must calculate their current
Pre-Core GPA and bring a copy to their scheduled advising
appointment. The GPA calculator is on the COE Web site at http://engr.oregonstate.edu/students/advising/documents/ADMIT_GPA_v2.xls.
Do not include the classes you are currently taking (although you may want to
temporarily put in the grades you “think” you are going to get just to see what
it does to your GPA). For the copy you bring to your advisor, however,
you should only include classes for which you have already received a grade. Note:
Sophomores who do not bring these to their appointment will need to RESCHEDULE.

STUDENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR IIE ANNUAL CONFERENCE
(May 17-21, Vancouver, BC). Each year, students contribute
greatly to the success of the IIE Annual Conference by helping with a variety
of tasks. Bag stuffing and registration are two of the areas where we
count on student help. We need 30 student volunteers. For each 8 hours you
work, you’ll receive a $100 discount on your conference registration. Student
early registration is only $155 for members and $195 for non-members, so you
can work off a significant amount of your cost by giving us a day of your time.
To volunteer, complete this online form:
http://www.zoomerang.com/survey.zgi?p=WEB227CJ3LU5GK. All
we need is your contact information, and we'll get in touch with you regarding
specific areas you can help with. More information about the conference is
at http://www.iienet.org/annual.
If you have any questions, please contact Heather Bradley, Director of Membership,
