Attention All MIME Students!

The month of February is OSU’s annual Food Drive in Cooperation with Linn-Benton Food Share.  Your donations of food and/or funds to this worthy cause will help people in your community to feed their families and themselves!   Food Donations can be dropped off in Dearborn 102, Rogers 204, and Rogers 236.   We have College of Engineering bumper stickers and pens for those who bring a food or cash donation to Dearborn 102 or Rogers 204.   You can also enter your name in a drawing for cool prizes.  We will be picking two winners per week and will award an extra special prize to the student who donates the most food and/or funds for the Food Drive.

(Note: Food donations that Linn Benton Food Share can NOT accept include glass containers (they break), rusty or unlabeled cans, perishable items, homemade items, non-commercially canned/packaged items, and any alcoholic beverages, mixes, or soda.)

Popcorn Sale!  You may have already been led down the hall to Dearborn 102 by the wonderful smell of fresh, hot popcorn.  Well, tell your friends to bring a buck and come enjoy a snack between classes or while you wait for your advising appointment.  All proceeds from the sale go directly to the Oregon Food Drive

ANOTHER AMAZING OPPORTUNITY, FOR MIME STUDENTS INTERESTED IN MATHEMATICAL MODELING. The COMAP Mathematical Contest in Modeling (http://www.comap.com/undergraduate/contests/mcm/) will be held Feb 14–18. This is an international, team based, undergraduate, mathematical modeling competition.  Each team has three students, from any major.  Two open-ended, real-world problems will be offered.  Teams will choose one problem and write up a thorough solution approach within 4 days.  Teams may use any inanimate source of data or materials.  Submissions will be judged on the basis of scientific merits as well as clarity and organization of the written report. Last year’s problems were “Gerrymandering” and “The Airplane Seating Problem,” and our OSU team, consisting of William G.K. Martin (MTH), Walter B. Woods (CS), and James S. Yih (ME) was awarded Meritorious. This placed them in the top 14% internationally. If you are interested in participating in this year’s competition, contact Nathan Gibson, Dept. of Math, gibsonn@math.oregonstate.edu. [posted 1/28]

AND STILL ONE MORE AMAZING OPPORTUNITY, FOR STUDENTS INTERESTED IN GRADUATE SCHOOL, MATERIALS SCIENCE, AND STUDYING IN A DISTANT LAND! There are still a couple of weeks left before the application deadline for the AMASE-Master degree program in Materials Science for next Fall. The AMASE-Master program is offered in Germany, France, Spain, and Sweden. It's a great opportunity to study materials science, get an advanced degree, and live in Europe. For more information, and an application, check their Web site at www.amase-master.net. Questions? Talk with any of the Materials faculty in Mechanical Engineering. [posted 1/28]

SOPHOMORE REQUIREMENT FOR WINTER ADVISING APPOINTMENT! All ME and IME sophomores (those who will be applying to Pro-School this coming spring or fall term) must calculate their current Pre-Core GPA and bring a copy to their scheduled advising appointment.   The GPA calculator is on the COE Web site at http://engr.oregonstate.edu/students/advising/documents/ADMIT_GPA_v2.xls. Do not include the classes you are currently taking (although you may want to temporarily put in the grades you “think” you are going to get just to see what it does to your GPA).  For the copy you bring to your advisor, however, you should only include classes for which you have already received a grade. Note: Sophomores who do not bring these to their appointment will need to RESCHEDULE. [posted 1/28]

EXTENDED MIME SHOP HOURS. The MIME machine shop will now be open until 8:45 pm on Thursdays as well as every other Saturday (8 am–4:45 pm) starting on February 2nd. The hours will remain in effect until further notice. [posted 1/22]

STUDENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR IIE ANNUAL CONFERENCE (May 17-21, Vancouver, BC). Each year, students contribute greatly to the success of the IIE Annual Conference by helping with a variety of tasks. Bag stuffing and registration are two of the areas where we count on student help. We need 30 student volunteers. For each 8 hours you work, you’ll receive a $100 discount on your conference registration. Student early registration is only $155 for members and $195 for non-members, so you can work off a significant amount of your cost by giving us a day of your time. To volunteer, complete this online form:

http://www.zoomerang.com/survey.zgi?p=WEB227CJ3LU5GK. All we need is your contact information, and we'll get in touch with you regarding specific areas you can help with. More information about the conference is at http://www.iienet.org/annual. If you have any questions, please contact Heather Bradley, Director of Membership, IIE, at (770) 349-1122 or hbradley@iienet.org. [posted 1/22]

INVITATION TO ARL–ONAMI POSTER/INTERVIEW SESSION: Mon, Feb 4, 4:00-6:00 pm, Kelley Engineering Center. While poster presentation is primarily for those who submitted white papers, ARL is also interested in project collaborations and collaborative relationships with academic researchers—in particular, meeting candidates for the following types of positions in their laboratories (in Adelphi, MD, and very well equipped): Graduate student internships; Postdoctoral fellows; and Faculty sabbaticals. If you, or any of your students or postdocs are interested in an introduction leading to an interview with ARL, please send an RSVP and C.V. to Elin McIlhattan (emcilhat@uoregon.edu) no later than Monday, January 28, 2008. Note: Even if you didn’t submit a white paper and don’t have any candidates for these types of positions, you are still encouraged to attend this event for the purposes of “mixing” and discovering potential collaboration opportunities and relationships.  We now know that past ONAMI “mega mixers” were seminal for several current successful efforts.  You don’t need to RSVP to simply attend, but should plan on getting a nametag when you arrive. VIRGINIA TECH. The Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME) at Virginia Tech is in the midst of an exciting period of aggressive growth begun in 2004 in all areas of Mechanical Engineering, with 19 new faculty hired over the past three years. This year we seek to fill six (6) new faculty positions at all ranks, to begin in August 2008. Three positions will be located at the Blacksburg campus and three will be located at the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR) in Danville, VA. Applicants across all areas of Mechanical Engineering with strong interdisciplinary interests are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to candidates in the areas of Energy, Materials, and the Environment (energy supply, distribution, and utilization in clean coal technologies, fuel cell, bio-renewable fuels, solar, wind, and nuclear energy) and Innovative Technologies and Complex Systems (nanotechnology, biomaterials, biotechnology, bioinformatics, robotics, materials research and high performance computing). Core mechanical engineering competencies in design, advanced materials, acoustics, thermofluid sciences, gas turbines, propulsion, dynamics and controls, sensors, mechatronics, autonomous systems, and robotics are sought. We are particularly interested in candidates who can interface mechanical engineering fundamentals with micro/nano, molecular, biological and biomedical systems, or who can develop virtual systems based on multi-scale modeling and computational sciences. Successful applicants must have an earned doctorate in mechanical engineering or a related field, and will be expected to develop a strong research program and contribute to the educational mission of the department at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Further information about the ME Department and details regarding each position and the application process can be found at http://www.me.vt.edu. The screening of applicants is expected to begin on February 15, 2008 and will continue until each position is filled.
