PCC INFO SESSION ON TUESDAY, FEB 17th

 

Fortune 500 company Precision Castparts Corp. (PCC) will hold an informal information session for OSU students, faculty, and staff on Tuesday, February 17, 6–8 pm in the CH2M Hill Alumni Center’s Willamette Room. A buffet dinner will be provided.

 

PCC is a worldwide, diversified manufacturer of complex metal components and products serving the aerospace, power generation, automotive, medical, and general industrial markets. Numerous career paths are available as the company continues to gain market share and expand its proprietary and technical expertise. Opportunities at PCC include:

WANT TO LAUNCH A ROCKET

AT THE UPCOMING AIAA SMALL ROCKET COMPETITION?

 

On Friday, February 6th, 3–6 pm, the AIAA club will be hosting a small rocket competition in Corvallis, in the park area on the north side of Jefferson Ave. between NW 11th and 14th streets. Refreshments will be provided.

 

If you are a student, faculty, staff, or community member interested in participating in this event as either a rocket launcher or observer, then attend the next AIAA meeting on Wednesday, January 21, 6 pm, Rogers 230 to hear more about the competition. Small rocket kits will be sold for $10 at the next AIAA meeting. There will also be a workshop for building these model rockets, tentatively scheduled for Monday, January 26, at 6pm in Covell 017 (workshop details to be confirmed next week). Note: Anyone can buy a rocket, but only AIAA members are allowed to enter the competition.

Mon Jan 19: 27th Annual Peace Breakfast. 7:30 am, MU Ballroom. Tickets are $10 for non-students and are available at the door or from the MU Business Office and the Office for Community and Diversity. "Kids Supporting Social Justice," a children’s event, will takes place in MU 206 during the breakfast. "Kids for Equality," at the Longhouse will follow breakfast. A birthday party for Dr. King, followed by a candlelight vigil to the steps of the MU, and a round table discussion, will begin at 5 pm at the Lonnie B. Harris Cultural Center.

Mon Jan 19: EWB El Salvador Project Meeting. 7 pm, Gilmore 234. The team is planning the next phase of implementing a clean, accessible water system for the Salvadoran communities of Las Mercedes and El Naranjito. All OSU students are welcome to attend.

RECYCLMANIA 2009 IS SEEKING VOLUNTEERS. OSU Campus Recycling is seeking volunteers for Recyclemania 2009, a nationwide competition between universities to see who can recycle the most, which will run January 18–March 28. Volunteer opportunities include distributing flyers, assisting with event set up and tear down, making class announcements, performing waste audits, promoting recycling through word of mouth, and more. KUDOS TO INTERNATIONAL IIE SCHOLARSHIP WINNER! Congratulations to IE senior Zach Fairman, recipient of the Marvin Mundel Memorial Scholarship for 2008–09. This highly selective Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) scholarship is available to undergraduate students enrolled in any IIE-recognized accredited school in the US, Canada, or Mexico, and awardees are selected based on academic performance, volunteer contributions to the university and community, and financial situation. The 10th annual Willamette Valley Engineers Week banquet will be held on Monday, February 23rd, at the CH2M Hill Alumni Center. The keynote address will be delivered by Dr. Don Pettit, NASA Astronaut, COE alumnus, and Oregonian. Dr. Pettit recently returned from another space mission, logging about 6 million miles while helping to renovate and expand the space station. UG  OSU AOP 2009 SCHOLARSHIP. The OSU Association of Office Professionals (AOP) will award at least one $500 scholarship based on achievement and potential for the 2009–10 academic year. Applicants must be full-time OSU students with sophomore, junior, or senior standing at the time of applying, with at least one full year of undergraduate studies remaining during the 2009–10 academic year. Also, applicants must have a major or declared minor in the College of Business, or regardless of major, have a parent or legal guardian who is a member in the OSU AOP. To apply, submit the completed application, three current letters of recommendation, and a current unofficial transcript to Maureen Childers, Disability Access Services, A200 Kerr Administration Building, Corvallis OR 97331, or email to maureen.childers@oregonstate.edu. UG/G  SME EDUCATION FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS. The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) Education Foundation awards scholarships to full-time undergraduates and graduates pursuing degrees in manufacturing and related fields. The Foundation awards $450,000 annually in scholarships with a 50% award rate—that means that by applying you have at least a 50% chance of receiving a scholarship. Last year, OSU SME received 15 scholarships totaling $40,000 (9% of the SME national scholarship fund). For more info and the application, click here. Application Deadline: February 1, 2008. G  UPCOMING GRAD SCHOOL FELLOWSHIP NOMINATION DEADLINES (5 postings). If you would like to be nominated, contact your faculty advisor. For a complete list of financial support programs offered by the Graduate School for 2009–10, click here. Note: The nominations for the following must be received by the OSU Graduate School by February 4, 2009 (unless otherwise noted):

·   Bayley Graduate Fellowship. ­Student must be enrolled in an advanced degree program at OSU in 2009–10. Annual stipend of approximately $4,000 will be provided. Fellowship will be awarded on the basis of academic performance and promise for the future. This award may be given in addition to a graduate teaching or research assistantship, and domestic and international students are eligible for nomination. ·   P.F. Yerex & Nellie Buck Yerex Graduate Fellowship. Student must be enrolled at OSU in 2009–10. The Yerex endowment will provide one or more fellowships for the academic year. Fellowship stipends are approximately $10,000, with final award distributions determined by actual endowment earnings. This award may be given in addition to a graduate teaching or research assistantship. Must be a US citizen or permanent resident. International graduate students are not eligible. ·   Diversity Advancement Pipeline Fellowship. This provides an annual fellowship stipend ($15,620–25,000) plus tuition remission for one year. A two-year departmental match is required. The fellowship, in combination with its matching component, is designed to provide a financial foundation sufficient to support academic success and degree completion. For more info, click here.

·   Graduate Diversity Recruitment Bonus. This provides $5,000 nonrenewable recruitment scholarships for the first academic year of graduate study. Graduate programs must provide base support at the .49 FTE level through a graduate assistantship, fellowship or equivalent. For more info, click here.

The Mechanical, Industrial, & Manufacturing Engineering E-Bulletin is a weekly, one-stop source of information about school events, announcements, scholarships, job postings, student club updates, and other school-related items. Past issues are posted here. Abbreviated e-bulletins are issued over the summer and during winter break.
