Anniversary of the Establishment of the School of Engineering and Mechanic Arts
at OSU and the appointment of the first Dean of Engineering, Grant A.
Covell. Classes had been offered in Engineering since 1891 and degrees awarded
since 1893, and by 1908 four autonomous departments were established:
Mechanical, Electrical, Mining, and Civil. After January 16th, 1908, the
autonomous department structure was discontinued and their administration was
coordinated by the Dean of Engineering. Three other schools were established at
the same time: Agriculture, Commerce and Domestic Science, and Art.

Thurs Jan 17: Teach For America Information Session. 6:30 pm, Memorial Union Room 211. Refreshments served. Teach For
America's mission is to help eliminate educational inequity by enlisting our
nation's most promising future leaders in this effort. We build a diverse,
highly selective corps of top recent college graduates and
professionals—individuals of all academic majors, career interests, and
backgrounds—who commit two years to teach in low-income communities and become
lifelong leaders in pursuit of educational excellence and equity. During their
two years, corps members go above and beyond traditional expectations to ensure
that children growing up in low-income areas have more of the opportunities
they deserve. At the same time, the corps members themselves gain the
conviction and insight necessary to be lifelong leaders for fundamental change,
regardless of their professional sector. For more details, visit http://www.teachforamerica.org/mission/index.htm
