OSU’s OCEAN RENEWABLE ENERGY RESEARCH
SEEKS FEDERAL FUNDING
The January issue of “Life@OSU”
recognizes two OSU research directors for signing on to an urgent letter to
President-elect Obama’s transition team calling for inclusion of ocean
energy—along with solar, wind, and geothermal—in federal renewable energy research
funding. Part of this funding, they argue, should go to environmental impact
research and public outreach. Dr. Robert Paasch (MIME associate
professor and interim program director of the Northwest National Marine
Renewable Energy Center) and George Boehlert (Fisheries and Wildlife
professor and director of OSU’s Hatfield Marine Science Center) signed the
document titled “Ocean Renewable Energy: a Shared Vision & Call for
Action.”

video of OSU’s energy generator being deployed, and learn more about the
importance of ocean renewable energy.

REQUEST FOR SHOW OF INTEREST
IN A SUMMER SAS CLASS. The
Statistics Department is providing a summer course to help researchers utilize
SAS in their research, but they would like to get input from faculty and
graduate students regarding both the scheduling and the content of the class. The
2-credit course is tentatively scheduled for 6/22–7/17/2009, MTWH, 2–2:50 pm in
Milne Computer Center (MCC 201). One content option is: “SAS for Mixed Models.”
Content would reflect chapters in the 2nd edition (2006) book by the
same name (click
here), plus new capabilities in the latest version of SAS (9.2). This
content choice would be for those with some exposure to SAS in coursework or in
working with procedures such as GLM in SAS and who need to move to modern mixed
modeling. If you are interested in a SAS
class of some type, e-mail Cliff Pereira (pereira@stat.orst.edu),
Department of Statistics, by Friday, January 16. In your e-mail, comment on
the above course schedule and content option, and if needed, provide an
alternative schedule and content option. [posted 1/12]
