MORE CONGRATULATIONS DUE…
Congratulations to ME PhD student Yuming Qiu, who has
been honored with the College
of Engineering’s 2005-06
Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award. Originally from Hubei in central mainland China, Yuming came to OSU
in fall 2004, after earning his BSME and dual Master degrees in mechanical
engineering and computer science from the University of Science
and Technology of China (USTC). His PhD dissertation, under the direction of
Dr. Ping Ge, is on the fundamental theory and implementation mechanism of a
risk-based approach for collaborative decision-making in distributed product
development environments. Since joining this department, Yuming has served as
the GTA for ME 382 and ENGR 213. His work in these classes has been highly
praised by both instructors and students. Yuming is the first international
student ever to win the CoE outstanding GTA award.

about her new book, High Tech Trash. 12 -1 pm in Kelley Engineering
Center, Room 1005.
Grossman issues a warning about the growing global issue of "e-waste"
and in a section, "How to Recycle a Computer, Cell Phone, TV, or Other
Digital Device," summarizes the resources now available to those with a
cyber-conscience. "There is an urgent need for e-waste regulation, and
Grossman's informative, harrowing, and invaluable report—is essential." (from Booklist). This event is FREE and open to the public.

Milam 215. Professor Mark Wilson of the College of Wooster will share with faculty his
innovative and engaging syllabi that he has been developing since 1999.
Students and their parents have both commented on the value his syllabi have
had in motivating them to learn and engage in the study of geology and other
topics. You will see how multiple learning preferences and interests are served
and how learners are encouraged to explore geology in depth. Please bring your

Learning Workshop: “Assessment Part I: Are Your Students Learning?” 2-5 pm,
Milam 215. Teaching is not learning. This rather
startling observation by Thomas Angelo, which appears in his best selling book College
Assessment, points out a major challenge facing all instructors.
This workshop introduces key concepts regarding assessment, demonstrates three
different tools faculty across all disciplines can use to ensure that what they
are teaching is indeed being learned, and familiarizes attendees with Angelo

Learning Workshop: “Assessment Part II: Assessment Tools and Their Use in the
Classroom.” 2-5 pm, Milam 215. This workshop is a follow-up to the previous
week’s introductory
workshop on assessment. Dr. Saunders will introduce the Classroom
Assessment Project Cycle and attendees will have an opportunity to complete the
Teaching Goals Inventory, which identifies instructor goals and will be used to
select related assessment tools. Dr. Saunders will then illustrate how
different assessment tools can be used to engage learners, promote learning,

Learning Workshop: “Addressing Student Learning Styles in Your Classrooms.”
2-5 pm, Milam 215. A substantial body of research suggests that students vary
in the way they take in and give out information and that they often learn best
when they have an opportunity to learn and express their knowledge in their
preferred mode(s). This workshop introduces Neil Fleming’s VARK tool for
identifying learning preferences, the four learning preference categories, and
implications of the scoring system. Handouts will be provided on how
instructors can modify their courses and assignments to appeal to the variety

GTAs and adjunct instructors, as well as regular faculty, are welcome to

LAPTOP CART NOW AVAILABLE FOR USE IN COE
CLASSES The College of Engineering IT group is now offering a laptop cart
for use in COE classes. The cart includes 10 modern laptops with power supplies
and extra batteries. Each laptop comes with: Matlab, Solidworks, MS
Office, AutoCAD, ArcGIS, ChemCAD,
and other commonly used sofeware. If you'd like to
check out the cart for your class, simply login to TEACH (http://engr.oregonstate.edu/teach), Click on "Class Administration",
then click the link labeled "Reserve the COE Wireless Laptop cart for a
class". You will be asked when and where you need the cart. An e-mail will
be sent out to make arrangements for the requested checkout date and
arrangements for transportation.
FALL TERM WIRELESS LAPTOP HELPDESK
CLASSROOM TRAINING AVAILABLE. For Fall Term '06, the COE Wireless Laptop
Helpdesk is offering in-class training sessions for students. Several
incoming freshman classes will include a full class session (ENGR 111, CE/CEM
101 and ChE/BioE 101). We're also offering sessions for other Engineering
classes. These 15-30 minute sessions would include one or two helpdesk
staff members covering the following topics:
1. Getting connected to the wireless network
2. Setting up the VPN client
3. Setting up printers
4. Accessing home directories
Class times will be limited based on helpdesk staff availability. If you
would be interested in having a session during your class time, please send an
email to support@engr.orst.edu including two or three preferred class times and

NEW USAGE GUIDELINES FOR ROGERS MEETING
ROOMS. Faculty and graduate students are asked to observe the following
guidelines when reserving the two Rogers meeting
rooms (238A and 304): Priority meeting uses for Rogers 238A (the Boeing Conference Room)
are those that involve videoconferencing or teleconferencing and meetings with
outside visitors. For all other types of meetings, including internal
research meetings, graduate student committee meetings, and department
committee meetings, please use Rogers 304.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS FOR IDAHO NATIONAL
LABORATORY (INL) Education, Training, and Research Partnerships FY 2007
Faculty Staff Exchange Program. This program provides opportunities for
university faculty to come to INL, for INL researchers to go to a
university, or both. The exchange interactions (two weeks minimum length) are
aimed at furthering development of research relationships, proposal development
discussions, and other activities yielding greater collaboration between
university and INL researchers. To participate in FSEP, send
a mini-proposal (five-page limit) prepared by the INL researcher and yourself
to Anne.Mollberg@inl.gov. Include the
following information in your proposal:
§
Description of activity with preliminary budget estimate of costs broken
out as labor, travel and other major cost categories
§
Explanation of the expected benefits to the directorate and the
laboratory
§
Approval by immediate manager and director
§
Estimate of start and end dates
§
If cost sharing is available, include the amount or percentage of the
total costs that your organization will provide and the amount or percentage
requested from FSEP. (Cost sharing is preferred but not required.)
Proposals
will be accepted throughout the fiscal year and should be received six to eight
weeks prior to the desired activity. A review committee composed of members of
the Science and Technology Council, Center for Advanced Energy Studies, and
ETRP will consider all proposals. Funding will be determined on a case-by-case
basis. Preferential consideration will be given to collaborations with any
Idaho University Consortium and National University Consortium partners.
FACULTY
RESEARCH GRANT OPPORTUNITY: The Human
Frontier Science Program has issued a Call for Letters of Intent for Research
Grants for Interdisciplinary Research. This program is encouraging
collaborative research across a wide range of disciplines including
engineering, life sciences and physical sciences.

SCHOLARSHIPS and FELLOWSHIPS
GAANN FELLOWSHIPS OFFERED FOR ME DOCTORAL
STUDIES at the UNIVERSITY
OF ALABAMA. The Department
of Mechanical Engineering at the University
of Alabama has recently
been awarded a grant from the U.S. Department of Education for a GAANN
Fellowship program, entitled “Energy Conservation for a Sustainable
Environment”. The program
provides fellowships up to $30,000 per year depending on financial need to
domestic mechanical engineering doctoral students with research interest in
very broad areas related to energy and the environment. The fellowships are for up to 3 years
with an additional 2 years as departmental research or teaching assistantships.
Note: The University of Alabama ME
Department is very interested in talking to
high-achieving undergraduate students who may be considering a PhD. They can admit high-achieving BS
graduates directly into the Ph.D. program. Applications by students from
traditionally underrepresented groups in science and engineering are strongly
encouraged. Awards will be made without regard to race, color, national origin,

ANNUAL COMPETITION FOR FULBRIGHT GRANTS
OPENS. The Institute of
International Education (IIE), in cooperation with the United States Department
of State and the J. William
Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board, is pleased to announce the
opening of the 2007-2008 Fulbright U.S. Student Program competition.
The Fulbright U.S. Student Program awards approximately 1,200 grants annually
and currently operates in over 140 countries around the world. Fulbright full
grants generally provide funding for round-trip travel, maintenance for one
academic year, health and accident coverage, and full or partial tuition.
Two OSU students received a Fulbright grant for the 2006-07 academic year (see: http://oregonstate.edu/dept/ncs/newsarch/2006/May06/fulbright.html). For all grants, applicants must be U.S. citizens
at the time of application and hold at least a bachelor’s degree or its
equivalent by the beginning date of the grant. Creative and performing artists
are not required to have a bachelor’s degree, but they must have four years of
relevant training or study. Complete program and application information

The US
Army Materiel Command (AMC) is currently recruiting engineering
graduates for the AMC FELLOWS PROGRAM. This is a is a fast-track program that provides the opportunity for
a graduate education while beginning a career with AMC. Program

THE AIR FORCE SUMMER FACULTY FELLOWSHIP
PROGRAM (SFFP) This program is intended for U.S.
citizens or permanent residents who have an earned doctorate in science or
engineering and who hold full-time science or engineering faculty positions at U.S.
colleges, community
colleges and universities. The duration of this summer fellowship is from
8 to 12 continuous
weeks and research is performed on-site. There is a competitive weekly
stipend and relocation and daily expense allowances are available. The

HUMAN POWERED VEHICLE TEAM
The HPV
team is affiliated with the OSU chapter of ASME and shares a similar role in
the College of Engineering as the Mini Baja and Formula
One teams. Members of the HPV team bring experience from many different areas
including exercise science, biomechanics, manufacturing, aviation, composite
structures, and automotive repair. Many of our team members are dedicated
cyclists and athletes. This year, we’ve got two groups going for design and
development of a new 2007 bike: the Frame Team, working on frame,
drive train and rider positioning components, and the Fairing Team,
working on fairing and major aerodynamic components. If you’re interested in joining the team this

Pi Tau
Sigma is a national Mechanical Engineering Honor Society that seeks to unify
exceptional students so that they may use their talents in the service of

foster the high ideals of the engineering profession, to stimulate interest in
coordinating departmental activities, to promote the mutual professional

was created in 1915 at the University
of Illinois, and since
then the organization has expanded to include over 150 active chapters. Oregon State's

at the level of tenured, full professor. Candidates should have an
earned doctorate in mechanical or aerospace engineering or a related field and

in the thermal-fluid sciences and their application to energy conversion and
utilization. General areas of interest are related to non-renewable, as
well as renewable, energy sources and their efficient use and include, but are not limited to, fossil fuel
combustion for transportation and power generation; heating, cooling, and refrigeration systems;
advanced energy systems including, but not limited to, nuclear energy; fuel
