SAE AT STATE FAIR


Rumor has it that the award-winning 2006 OSU Mini Baja and Formula cars—and some of the people who built them—are going to be at the Oregon State Fair in Salem this weekend and next (August 25-27 and September 1-3). So if you go to the fair on any of these days, be sure to check out the SAE booth! NOTE: Volunteers to work at the booth are still needed for September 1–3.  Please email Jaynie Schonbrod at schonbrj@engr.orst.edu if you can help.  (Bonus: volunteers get free fair admission on they day they work.)

ENGINEERS WITHOUT BORDERS NEWS and UPCOMING EVENTS:

Plan ahead for the First Annual EWB-OSU Project Benefit Banquet: October 6th, 6–8:30 pm, OSU Memorial Union Ballroom. Come celebrate the success of our project thus far and support its implementation. Enjoy a silent auction of pieces donated by artists in the community followed by an authentic Salvadoran meal. Our project team will also present details about the project to date. Banquet tickets are $50 and all proceeds support the material costs and implementation expenses of the El  Salvador Water Project. Also, consider attending the EWB-USA West Coast Regional Workshop 2006 : "How to Complete Projects More Effectively" scheduled for October 13-15 at UC Santa Barbara.  Potential topics for the  workshop's hands-on training include: (1) Ethnographic & participatory methods, understanding culture and  fostering a relationship with a community, interviewing and workshop techniques; (2) Water filtration and disinfection technologies, water testing,  sampling, and evaluation techniques; (3) Site assessment techniques - GPS, surveying, mapping, soils  classification;  (4) Structural techniques - concrete mixing, brick making, simple  understanding of structural integrity;  (5) Sanitation - evaluating community sanitation, wastewater  treatment principals and techniques, construction methods; (6) Simple and appropriate technology - photovoltaics, batteries,  simple machines. WILL YOU BE LOOKING FOR AN ENGINEERING INTERNSHIP DURING 2006-07?If so, check out the new Fall-term “Internship Search Boot Camp” class, ALS 210! This 2-credit class will run on Tuesdays from 3-4:50 pm. Everyone is welcome to enroll; there are no prerequisites or over-qualifications. The only catch is that only 30 spots are available. Here’s the course description: 

 

ALS 210: HOW TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN YOUR INTERNSHIP SEARCH. Internship preparation course designed to provide students with the fundamental tools to find and secure an internship. Topics will include internship search strategies, resumes, cover letters, and interviewing. Guest speakers and site visits will provide additional insight into these topics from the perspective of employers and students with prior internship experience. Reflection on student's interests, values, and goals will also be integrated into the course. PREREQ: None.

 

 Note: In addition to the regular curriculum, there will be a focus on the fall application process for highly competitive Summer ’07 internships.

 

ME & IME STAFF MOVES RELATED TO FORTHCOMING DEPARTMENT MERGER

As part of the upcoming IME–ME merger into the proposed School of Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Systems Engineering, some of the ME and IME staff will be changing locations and redistributing functions this summer. New staff locations and primary functions are anticipated to be as follows:

§          Undergraduate Student Services for ME, IME, and General Engineering, including advising, will be housed in Dearborn 102. Staff located in the Dearborn office will include Stel Walker (assistant dept. head, ME), John Parmigiani (ME advisor), Nicole Ray (ME advisor), Gina Newcomb and Karen Willard (undergraduate support), and Denise Emery (ME advisor and undergraduate project coordinator), Lynn Paul (IME advisor), and Ebi Netto (IME advisor).

§          Business support for the New School, including HR and accounting, will be located in Covell 118. ME and IME staff located in Covell will include Ken Funk (interim dept. head, IME), Phyllis Helvie (HR), Angela Franklin (accounting), and Barbie Gee (research accounting).

§          Research & Development and Graduate Student Support for ME and IME will be housed in Rogers Hall, in and around the main office (R204). Rogers Hall staff will include Belinda Batten (dept. head, ME), Tracy Ann Robinson (corporate relations/dept. communications), Heather Glover (research support), Jean Robinson (graduate student support), and Gitte Johnson (office and general ME/IME support).

SCHOLARSHIPS and FELLOWSHIPS

 

ANNUAL COMPETITION FOR FULBRIGHT GRANTS OPENS.  The Institute of International Education (IIE), in cooperation with the United States Department of State and the J. William  Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board, is pleased to announce the opening of the 2007-2008 Fulbright U.S. Student Program competition. The Fulbright U.S. Student Program awards approximately 1,200 grants annually and currently operates in over 140 countries around the world. Fulbright full grants generally provide funding for round-trip travel, maintenance for one academic year, health and accident coverage, and full or partial tuition.  Two OSU students received a Fulbright grant for the 2006-07 academic year (see: http://oregonstate.edu/dept/ncs/newsarch/2006/May06/fulbright.html). For all grants, applicants must be U.S. citizens at the time of application and hold at least a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent by the beginning date of the grant. Creative and performing artists are not required to have a bachelor’s degree, but they must have four years of relevant training or study. Complete program and application information is available at www.fulbrightonline.org. THE NAVAL RESEARCH LABORATORY (NRL) POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM. This program is open to U.S. citizens and legal permanent residents and offers a competitive stipend as well as insurance, relocation, and travel allowances.  This program offers one to three year postdoctoral fellowships designed to increase the involvement of scientists and engineers from academia and industry to scientific and technical areas of interest and relevance to the Navy.  This program has a rolling admission.  Go to: http://www.asee.org/nrl to learn more about the program.

BAE SYSTEMS, ARMAMENT SYSTEMS DIVISION, in Minneapolis, MN, is seeking a Finite Element Structural Modeling intern for Fall 2006 (September start date).  Internship Functions:   Generate models for finite-element analysis models for finite-element analysis (static, transient, vibration, and shock) using IDEAS, PATRAN, or Hyperworks software. BERUFSAKADEMIE RAVENSBURG (http://www.ba-ravensburg.de), located in Friedrichshafen in southern Germany (on beautiful Lake Constanze near the Swiss border) has an internship opportunity for a second or higher year Bachelors student or a Masters student in Mechanical Engineering. The internship can be commenced immediately, but start dates around October 1 ‘06 and January 1 ‘07 are also possible. The internship can last from 2 to 6 months. Mechanical Engineer II. Duties: Lead and perform detailed design tasks directed toward the production release of new and modified products.
