UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH, INNOVATION,
SCHOLARSHIP AND CREATIVITY (URISC) PROGRAM:
CALL FOR SUMMER 2007 FUNDING PROPOSALS. URISC is a Research Office program that
supports undergraduate research activities, enabling undergraduate students to
initiate a scholarly relationship with faculty early in their academic careers.
All undergraduate students currently pursuing a baccalaureate degree at OSU and
who are in good academic standing are eligible to apply. Proposals must be
initiated and written by the student, but should be done in close
coordination with the faculty project advisor. For accepted projects, the
Research Office will provide 60% of the total budget request, to a maximum of
$1,800.00. Applications
are due in the Research Office by March 5. The complete program description,

STUDENT
ORAL PRESENTATION PRACTICE EVENT FOR REGIONAL ASME “OLD GUARD” COMPETITION IN IDAHO. The ASME
Oregon Section invites Mechanical Engineering students and ASME members to an
oral presentation competition to be held Friday,
March 9th, 6–9 p.m. at Buster’s Texas Style Barbecue, 11419 SW
Pacific Highway in Tigard (just west of the Hwy 99/I-5 interchange—see
http://www.bustersbarbecue.com/maps/index.htm#Tigard). This
event gives students an opportunity to practice their presentations for the
regional ASME “Old Guard” competition (to be held March 30-31, 2007 at the University of Idaho
in Moscow) and to get help from section members in
preparing for the Idaho
competition. Free dinners will be provided
for presenters and their team members. Awards: The
competition will consist of short oral presentations by students discussing
their current projects. ASME Section members will judge the competition
and monetary prizes will be awarded. Presenters: By March 2,

NASA
ANNOUNCES 2006-07 AERONAUTICS COMPETITION FOR UNIVERSITY STUDENTS. The Fundamental Aeronautics Program of the
Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters is pleased to
announce this year’s aeronautics competition for the 2006-07 academic
year. For this year’s competition, students are invited to propose solutions
for complex technical problems in hypersonic and supersonic flight; subsonic
fixed and rotary wing transport; or Mars entry, descent, and landing. Some of
these challenges occur in Earth's atmosphere, others occur in space.
Individuals, small (<10-person), and larger undergraduate/graduate student
teams are all invited to participate. Multi-disciplinary, multi-department
teams are encouraged. College entries are due in late April. For competition

ACOUSTICAL OCEANOGRAPHY, a graduate-level course in applied ocean acoustics
that may be of interest to IME and ME grads, is being offered Spring quarter on
Tues/Thurs 2–3:30. Taught by Jim Moum (7-2553) and Kelly Benoit-Bird (7-2063),
the course covers a range of topics in geological, physical, biological, and
fisheries applications and will also discuss permitting issues. The course includes
lectures, discussions, as well as assignments working with acoustic data.
Course readings focus on primary literature supplemented by chapters from

GRANTS
AVAILABLE FOR FACULTY-SPONSORED SPRING/SUMMER REUs. The COE has received a grant from
INTEL to provide undergraduate research experiences for women and minority engineering
students. There is no cost to the
researcher (except your time!). The goal of this program is to encourage a greater number of
women and minority students to obtain a graduate
degree in engineering. Projects can begin immediately and continue through the
summer, or can last through the end of spring quarter. There is a strong
potential for program renewal, so potentially, the student could work for
multiple years. End date for the current project is Sept 2007. Students may be
freshman-seniors. Criteria for projects:
Intel has targeted specific areas for this REU. Projects may be in EECS, and
specific areas of ChemE, IME,
ME, Chemistry, or Physics. If you would like to participate, contact
Ellen Momsen for more details ASAP, and let Ellen know whether you already have
an undergraduate student (female or minority) in mind for the research
experience. We have many students who are interested, so we can also select
students for you to interview.

Alpha Pi
Mu is the National Industrial Engineering honor society. Its goals are to
recognize and support exceptional IE students; encourage advances in IE
education; unify the IE student body and further IE student-faculty relationships;
assist and cooperate with other IE-affiliated organizations and individuals;
and promote the academic and professional welfare of APM members through the
associations and experiences that result from bringing together a group with

ENGINEERS WITHOUT BORDERS OSU (EWB–OSU)
EWB-OSU
is a student chapter of EWB-USA with a mission to implement sustainable
engineering projects in developing countries while developing responsible
engineering students. We are currently working on developing and implementing a
potable water delivery system for a small community in rural El Salvador. This
multi-disciplinary group (currently, about 30 academic majors and programs are

HUMAN POWERED VEHICLE TEAM (HPV)
The HPV
team is affiliated with the OSU chapter of ASME and shares a similar role in
the College of Engineering as the Mini Baja and Formula
One teams. Members of the HPV team bring experience from many different areas
including exercise science, biomechanics, manufacturing, aviation, composite
structures, and automotive repair. Many of our team members are dedicated
cyclists and athletes. This year, we’ve got two groups going for design and
development of a new 2007 bike: the Frame Team, working on frame,
drive train and rider positioning components, and the Fairing Team,
working on fairing and major aerodynamic components. If you’re interested in joining the team this
term and helping us build this year’s vehicle, contact Ryan

MICROGRAVITY FLIGHT TEAM

work on a research project for NASA? Want to develop something that will help
put a person on Mars? You like engines, why not work on a prototype nuclear
engine that powers a plasma rocket? Do you want to conduct an experiment in
zero gravity at 26,000 ft? If you answered yes to any of these questions, come
check out the OSU Microgravity Flight Team! We meet in the Kelley

OREGON WAVE (WILLAMETTE AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES ENTERPRISE)
OREGON
WAVE is a group of OSU students, professors, and industry partners who have
modified one of the SAE MiniBAJA racers for autonomous control. We’re working
on getting it ready for the next DARPA Grand Challenge, tentatively set for
2007–08. If you’re a graduate and undergraduate ME, EECS, or IME student
interested in helping to make our robot the best in the world, please come to

OSU SOLAR VEHICLE TEAM (OSUSVT)

SPORTS LOTTERY GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS. Qualified degree-seeking graduate and
post-baccalaureate professional students are encourage to consult with their
advisors about applying for an Oregon Sports Lottery Graduate Scholarship. For

funding available for these awards will be distributed equally on the basis of

NEW! THE ZONTA CLUB OF CORVALLIS is offering ten $2,400
scholarships for the 2007–08 school year. These scholarships are for OSU and
LBCC undergraduates who have resumed their studies after a minimum one-year
break in their education (preference given to older-than-average students and
students with family responsibilities) and are interested in working to improve
the status of women—legal, health, political, economic, educational, or professional
(Note: This may include women serving as
role models by entering non-traditional fields)—and/or (b) planning to work
in a profession involving the welfare of children. Scholarship applications are

NATIONAL
CAPITAL AREA LEADERSHIP AWARDS. Two $2,500 awards are available for
undergraduate students who are interning in the greater Washington, DC,
area this spring or summer. Of this
money, $2,000 is disbursed into the recipient’s billing account during the
internship term. An additional $500 is
awarded to returning full-time students during the term immediately following internship
completion (with the exception of graduating seniors, who will receive the full
award during their internship).
Preference is given to candidates of junior or senior class standing and
awards are based on qualifications as well as financial need. Applications
for Spring 2007 are due Friday, March 2.

2007 CRITICAL LANGUAGE SCHOLARSHIPS FOR
INTENSIVE SUMMER INSTITUTES. As part of the National Security Language
Initiative (NSLI), a U.S. government interagency effort to expand dramatically
the number of Americans studying and mastering critical need foreign languages,
the Department of State Critical Language Scholarships will provide funding for
U.S. citizen undergraduate, Master’s and PhD students to participate in Summer
2007 language programs in Arabic, Bangla/Bengali, Chinese, Hindi, Korean,
Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Turkish, and Urdu. Institute locations: Bangladesh, China,
Egypt, Hong
Kong, India, Jordan, Morocco,
South Korea, Tajikistan, Tunisia,
Turkey, Yemen, and Russia. Duration: 7–11
weeks, beginning in early to mid-June. Grant benefits: ALL program costs
except passports are covered for participants. Eligibility: Applicants
must be U.S.
citizens and must be either currently enrolled in a degree-granting program at
the undergraduate* or graduate level or have graduated from an undergraduate or
graduate program no more than 2 years ago. Students in all disciplines including
business, engineering, science, the social sciences and humanities are

ASSOCIATION
FOR IRON & STEEL TECHNOLOGY SCHOLARSHIPS: Application deadline is March 2.
The AIST Foundation will be awarding 9 scholarships for the 2007–08
school year. These scholarships are available to all technical engineering
students with a demonstrated interested in the iron and steel industry. To
be considered for all 9 scholarships, complete one application, available at http://www.aist.org/foundation/scholarships.htm. Students
with a demonstrated interest in the iron and steel industry and who will be graduating
in 2009 (entering junior year in 2007), are also invited to apply for a STEEL Engineering Education Link Initiative
scholarship. Students enrolled in a metallurgy or materials science program
and who will be graduating in 2009 may also apply for a
Ferrous Metallurgy Education Today [FeMET] Initiative scholarship. Recipients of both the STEEL and FeMET
scholarships are awarded $5,000 their junior year, a paid summer internship
with a North American steel company between their junior and senior year, and

AWARDS: CALL FOR APPLICATIONS. Individual donors have provided scholarship
opportunities in recognition of the importance of a diverse student population
at Oregon State University.
A committee of former faculty and alumni will review applications for academic
achievement, involvement in the community, special talents, employment
experience, aspirations and/or financial need (as determined by the Free
Application for Federal Student Aid) and donor-specified criteria such as
country of origin, ethnicity, citizenship, major, college. To be considered, please complete
