Meanwhile, faculty will also be voting... for the 2011-12 Most Outstanding ME and IME Seniors. The winners of these four awards will be honored at the MIME Winter Awards Banquet on Feb 29 (see next announcement).
Pro-School Students and Faculty: Join us on Feb. 29 for the MIME Pro-School Winter Banquet
Each year, the School of MIME stages a banquet for pro-school students. Attendance is free, and along with a great meal and a chance at raffle prizes, this is a great opportunity to socialize with both peers and faculty and to recognize this year’s ME and IME graduating seniors, many of whom will be leaving campus after winter term. Plus, the winners of the 2011-12 Outstanding Seniors and Teacher of the Year elections will be announced for the first time. This year's banquet will be Feb 29 at 5:30 pm in MU 109.
The banquet is being organized by Alpha Pi Mu and Pi Tau Sigma, the IME and ME honor societies. To attend, please sign up in Dearborn 102 by 5 pm on Feb 15. Your significant other is welcome to join us as well.

Undergrad and School-Wide
TOUR LEADER OF FREEZE DRY TECHNOLOGY. The Willamette Valley Section of the Society of Women Engineers is hosting a professional development program and tour of Oregon Freeze Dry in Albany on March 8, at 4 pm. OFD is relatively unknown in our area, yet its 35 acre spread provides 60% of the US capacity for freeze drying. They produce numerous food products as well as processing medical and pharmaceutical devices and materials. Following the tour, there is an option dinner meet-n-greet at Sweet Red Coffee and Wine Bistro. Email your required registration to Betty Coulman by Feb 10 for both activities.
SERVE COMMUNITIES DURING SPRING BREAK. There are several opportunities for you to travel and serve some disadvantaged populations while getting a great experience to put on your resume. Trips this year include Urban Beautification and Poverty in Yakima, WA; Hunger and Homelessness in San Francisco, CA; and Environmental Restoration in Newport, OR. EXPLORE YOUR EARTH SCIENCE INTEREST. The Increasing Diversity in Earth Science (IDES) mentoring program is now accepting applications. IDES is a 2-year Oregon-focused mentoring program for sophomores/juniors that provides students from diverse academic and personal backgrounds the opportunity to be involved in and explore the Earth Sciences as a possible career-track. Participants are funded while being mentored and attending summer training in basic geographic information systems, image processing, and developing projects of interest. ATTEND THE NEXT WOMEN IN ENGINEERING GLOBAL MARATHON. The 2012 Global Marathon is a free virtual networking and problem solving event designed to bring women engineers worldwide together to discuss making a difference through engineering. It runs March 5–10 with the North American program happening on March 5. Registration is required.
Faculty/Staff/Grad Students
GRAD STUDENTS: VOICE YOUR OPINION ON GRADUATE EDUCATION AT OSU. Make your voice heard and join with other graduate students to help shape the Graduate School's 5-Year Strategic Plan. An open forum will be held TODAY, Feb 6, 4–5:30 pm in MU 109. Although international students are welcome to attend the Feb 6 forum, another session specific to international students will be held Feb 7, 4–5:30 pm, also in MU 109. RSVPs are requested. There will be refreshments and door prizes.
BE A GTA FELLOW. The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) is recruiting 10 experienced graduate students to serve as GTA Fellows for 2012 and gain valuable teaching experience and participate in regular trainings and professional development. GTA Fellows’ primary responsibility will be planning and facilitating the CTL’s annual New GTA Orientation event in September but will also have additional for-credit opportunities to develop and facilitate GTA workshops and to serve as consultants to their fellow teaching assistants in their respective departments. Scholarships, Fellowships, and Research Internships
REU = Research Experience for Undergraduates

REU IN ELECTRON MICROSCOPY AT PORTLAND STATE. Portland State University's summer REU program is an 8-week program that gives students the opportunity to learn to operate either a scanning electron or focused ion beam microscope (SEM or FIB), and then use these techniques when working on their independent research projects. The program runs June 18–Aug 10, and students will be expected to work approximately 40 hours per week for a $4,000 stipend. Visit the REU website for more information and apply by Feb 15.
REU IN NANOSCALE SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING AT VANDERBILT UNIVERSITY. The Vanderbilt Institute for Nanoscale Science and Engineering (VINSE) focuses on interdisciplinary nanoscale research at the interface of biology, chemistry, physics, and engineering. Each REU participate will work directly with VINSE faculty members and their research groups and be part of the larger VINSE community. Click here for more information and apply by Feb 15.
HYDRO RESEARCH FOUNDATION. The Hydro Research Foundation is looking to fund 7-10 graduate student fellowships worth $46,000 to $80,000. Applications are due March 1. Click here for more information.
APPLY NOW FOR THE OSU RETIREMENT ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP. The Oregon State Retirement Association (OSURA) provides scholarship support to undergraduate students at OSU who are majoring in a subject that contributes to a career that promotes healthy aging. If you have completed at least one year of study and have at least one year remaining toward your first bachelors, you are eligible to apply. Apply by March 5 for your chance at a scholarship award of $750 to $1,500. Click here for more information.
OSU FOLK CLUB SCHOLARSHIP FOR FEMALE STUDENTS. The OSU Folk Club Thrift Shop is looking to award $2,400 scholarships to female students who are 30 or older by the application deadline, are a resident of Benton county, and are full-time OSU students in the 2012-2013 school year while pursuing a bachelor’s, master’s, or professional degree (no PhD or EdD). Preference will be given to women who have had a break in their post-secondary studies and are returning after an absence and principal criteria are financial need and merit.
