History

Industrial Assessment Centers [formerly called the Energy Analysis and Diagnostic Center (EADC) program] were created by the Office of Industrial Technology (OIT), a branch of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The Centers were created in 1976 to help small and medium-sized manufacturing facilities cut back on unnecessary costs from inefficient energy use, ineffective production procedures, excess waste production, and other production-related problems.

The average audit produces recommendations that can save the plant $183,000. Twenty-five assessments are completed each year as required by the DOE.

George "Greg" W. Wheeler has been the Director of the Oregon State University Center since its inception in 1987. Oregon State University's Industrial Assessment Center has performed audits all over the Northwest including Oregon, Washington, Northern California, Idaho, Utah, Nevada and Alaska. Other Western Division IAC's are located at Arizona State University, Bradley University, Colorado State University, Iowa State University, University of Illinois of Chicago, Loyola Marymount University, Oklahoma State University, San Diego State University, San Francisco State University, Texas A&M University, University of Texas-Arlington and the University of Utah.
