Instructions for New MIME Graduate Students

Welcome to graduate studies in the School of Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering!

We look forward to helping you achieve your professional and personal goals. To prepare yourself to begin your graduate studies at OSU, you should do the following.

  1. Follow the instructions that accompanied your letter of acceptance from OSU.

  2. Obtain an OSU ID card following the instructions at http://oregonstate.edu/fa/businessaffairs/idcenter.

The University ID Center is located in room B094 (basement level) of the Kerr Administration Building. For a campus map, see http://oregonstate.edu/visitors/tour/campusmap.htm.

  3. Let us know that you have arrived. Check in at the MIME main office (Rogers 204) and give us your name, local address, local telephone number, and e-mail address.

  4. Consult the following documents:

    • Graduate Student Guide to Success (printed version available at the Graduate School office, 200 Kerr Administration Building)

    • OSU General Catalog and Schedule of Classes (printed version of the General Catalog available at the Office of Admissions and Orientation, 110 Kerr Administration Building; and of the current term Schedule of Classes at the Registrar's Office in 102 Kerr Administration Building or the OSU Bookstore in the Memorial Union)

  5. If you haven't done so already, visit the following web sites for information about student life at OSU, the Graduate School, and the School of MIME, and for information specific to your program of study:

  6. Get to know the graduate faculty in your program, and meet with faculty whose research and teaching pursuits most closely match your interests:

  7. Select a tentative list of courses to take this term and ensure (a) that you satisfy the course prerequisites and (b) that no schedule conflicts exist. Then...

    • Mechanical Engineering grads: See the lead professor in your concentration area to discuss your course schedule for the upcoming term.

    • Materials Science grads: See Dr. Bill Warnes, Materials Science Program Director, to discuss your course schedule for the upcoming term.

    • Industrial Engineering grads: See Dr. Logen Logendran, IME Graduate Program Chair, to discuss your course schedule for the upcoming term.

  8. Select your major professor. You must select a major professor by the end of your first term in your graduate program.  Find a faculty member whose research and teaching interests are appropriate and who is willing to advise you and supervise your studies at OSU.

  9. Develop a tentative program of study.

    • Use the above resources and consult with your advisor to create a tentative program of study for yourself.

    • Use a copy of the appropriate (ie., MS, MEng, PhD) Program of Study Form to help you organize your program (paper forms are available at the Graduate School, 200 Kerr Adm Bldg).

  10. Register for the current term, following the registration instructions in the OSU Schedule of Classes (available in booklet form at the Registrar's Office, 102 Kerr Adm Bldg).

  11. New International Graduate Students: Visit OSU International Programs' Orientation and Arrival Information Web site.

Preregistration and fees apply to this test.  Come to the MIME office in 204 Rogers for assistance with registration and fee clarification. Students will NOT be admitted on a drop-in basis. Students need to have ONID accounts to use Kidder Lab.  This means that to take the SPEAK test, you MUST must have an ONID account in advance.

The SPEAK test is very similar to the TSE (Test of Spoken English). Information about SPEAK testing is available here.
Sample questions for this test are available here.
Preparation materials for the TAST (TOEFL Academic Speaking Test), which may also be helpful, are available here.
(Note: the format of the TAST is different from that of the SPEAK, but these on-line practice materials will help with general speaking skills.)
