RATE PROCESSES IN MATERIALS
Course Description
Diffusion in solids, including vacancy and interstitial and short-circuit diffusion. Phase transformations including classic nucleation and growth theory. Applications to materials development. Laboratory will emphasize microstructural evaluation and quantitative metallography.
Topics
- Solid state diffusion
- Kinetics of phase transformations
- Nucleation and growth theory
- Reaction rate constants
- Microstructural development of alloys
Learning Outcomes
The student, upon completion of this course, will be able to:
- Students will demonstrate understanding of nucleation theory and growth kinetics through application to homework, exam problems, and the laboratory report.
- Students will demonstrate understanding of diffusion in crystalline solids through application to homework, exam problems, and laboratory projects.
- Students will demonstrate working knowledge of metallography through successfully completing the hands-on laboratory and the laboratory reports.
