Course Description

Diffusion in solids, including vacancy and interstitial and short-circuit diffusion. Phase transformations including classic nucleation and growth theory. Applications to materials development. Laboratory will emphasize microstructural evaluation and quantitative metallography.

Topics

  • Solid state diffusion
  • Kinetics of phase transformations
  • Nucleation and growth theory
  • Reaction rate constants
  • Microstructural development of alloys

Learning Outcomes

The student, upon completion of this course, will be able to:

  • Students will demonstrate understanding of nucleation theory and growth kinetics through application to homework, exam problems, and the laboratory report.
  • Students will demonstrate understanding of diffusion in crystalline solids through application to homework, exam problems, and laboratory projects.
  • Students will demonstrate working knowledge of metallography through successfully completing the hands-on laboratory and the laboratory reports.
