Course Description

Course emphasis is on measurement techniques and data analysis methods related to fluid mechanics and heat transfer. Proper experimental methods, data and uncertainty analyses related to thermal and fluids measurements are discussed. Local and spatial mapping of fluid and thermal fields are highlighted.

Topics

  • Uncertainty analysis
  • Thermal-fluidic experimental design
  • Local point based velocity, flow and temperature measurements
  • Hot-wire anemometry
  • Particle image velocimetry
  • Infrared thermography
  • Whole field measurement

Learning Outcomes

The student, upon completion of this course, will be able to:

  • Given a problem scenario, apply fundamentals of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer theory to identify quantities that need to be measured and formulate an experimental strategy in order to measure these using appropriate methods.
  • Perform measurements using typical instruments in fluid mechanics and heat transfer.
  • Analyze and interpret data recorded from global and/or local measurements.
  • Apply uncertainty analysis during the design, measurement, and analysis stages of an experiment.
  • Synthesize current literature in experimental fluid mechanics and heat transfer to provide a critical review of a measurement technique.
