Course Description

Mechatronics is a project course, where teams of students build a robotic system that can autonomously play Checkers against a classmates' machine. The project integrates electronics, computer control, and mechanical components, and teams will generally be comprised of students from the appropriate specialties of engineering. The course offers suggestions and assistance towards completion of the project, but students are expected to design and build original systems of their own design.

Topics

  • Robotics
  • Electronics
  • Mechanical design
  • Software control
  • System integration
  • Actuators
  • Microcontrollers

Learning Outcomes

The student, upon completion of this course, will be able to:

  • Analyze basic electrical circuits including semiconductor devices.
  • Analyze basic analog and digital signaling circuits including operational amplifiers and TTL/CMOS integrated circuit systems.
  • Use a variety of sensors, actuators, and data acquisition techniques.
  • Demonstrate a basic knowledge of microcontroller operation in mechatronic control situations.
