Course Description

Failure analysis and design of machine components.

Topics

  • Sress review
  • Principal stress
  • Static failure theory
  • Stactic shaft design
  • Fatigue failure (fully revered and fluctuating loads)
  • Dynamic shaft design
  • Gears
  • Springs
  • Bolted joints
  • Welding joints

Learning Outcomes

The student, upon completion of this course, will be able to:

  • Select and apply an appropriate failure theory for a machine component.
  • Apply static and dynamic (fatigue) failure theory to a machine component.
  • Select bearings, shafts, springs and gears for a given load situation.
  • Analyze bolted and welded joints for failure.
  • Apply the above concepts to a real product in a reverse-engineering scenario.
