MECHANICAL COMPONENT DESIGN
Course Description
Failure analysis and design of machine components.
Topics
- Stress review
- Stress analysis
- Static failure theory
- Fatigue failure (fully revered and fluctuating loads)
- Dynamic shaft design
- Gears
- Springs
- Bearings
Learning Outcomes
The student, upon completion of this course, will be able to:
- Reverse engineer a real product and analyze external forces.
- Select and apply an appropriate static failure theory to a machine component.
- Select and apply an appropriate dynamic (fatigue) failure theory to a machine component.
- Select mechanical components for a given load situation and analyze for failure.
- Perform a competitive analysis and provide insights on risk and reliability.
- Communicate analysis results and basic engineering concepts.
