Course Description

Failure analysis and design of machine components.

Topics

  • Stress review
  • Stress analysis
  • Static failure theory
  • Fatigue failure (fully revered and fluctuating loads)
  • Dynamic shaft design
  • Gears
  • Springs
  • Bearings

Learning Outcomes

The student, upon completion of this course, will be able to:

  • Reverse engineer a real product and analyze external forces.
  • Select and apply an appropriate static failure theory to a machine component.
  • Select and apply an appropriate dynamic (fatigue) failure theory to a machine component.
  • Select mechanical components for a given load situation and analyze for failure.
  • Perform a competitive analysis and provide insights on risk and reliability.
  • Communicate analysis results and basic engineering concepts.
